Occupational Therapy Job

Charlie Said:

How can a person get a job as an occupational therapy aid?

We Answered:

Get an associates degree from a local community college as an occupational therapy assistant. Then, work from there. You could work in a hostpital, nursing home, or even a school.

Is the job of Occupational Therapy considered stressful?

We Answered:

For salary, it depends on the facility and your contract. I think you do need a little less science than PTs - at least my school did. The pre-reqs for the programs were different, with more science based for the PTs. However, once the program was started, we actually shared some classes. As far as being strong - it depends on the setting. I have worked primarily with adults and I have to do a lot of lifting - transferring people from one place to another. I am 5'2'' and weigh 115 but I can transfer pretty heavy weight using the correct technique. I often have people tell me I will never be able to lift them and when I do, they are surprised! As far as stressful - sometimes when you feel you have hit a brickwall with a patient and can't help them the way you would like to can be pretty frustrating. I think the most stressful thing for me was when I worked in a nursing home and they really pushed your efficienty - how much time you actually spend in the building that is considered billable time. They target was 85% - well, it seemed if you hit that, then the target became higher. I eventually was expected to have over 100% efficiency - which meant usually seeing 2 - 3 people at a time and I don't feel like I could give quality treatment that way. But - it is a great field. There are many different areas in which to focus, the field is in high demand, and the pay is great. I do home health therapy and my schedule varies week to week. This week I worked 21 hours this week and made $1275 plus about $150 in mileage. In facilities I make $50 an hour. Good luck!

Occupational Therapy (Job Shadowing)?

We Answered:

All you will be allowed to do is just stand there and watch for any direct care sessions. If for instance, you are observing and exercise group and they are batting a balloon back and forth, they may let you bat the balloon with them, but that would be about it.

As for what area to observe, what area are you interested in? Physical medicine/ Rehab, Psych, school setting, nursing home, sports med, job retraining? OT's work in a huge variety of settings. I started out in Psych and after about a year, I was pretty burnt out. I switched to a Brain Injury unit and loved it. With Brain injury, you focus not only on physical disabilities, but the cognitive retraining as well.

If you shadow at a fairly large hospital, you would have the opportunity to see the different populations there...inpatient, outpatient, psych, and then if they have a specialty unit such as brain injury, spinal cord, ortho, or burns...you have a chance to see that as well.

Good luck
