Occupational Therapy Major

Teresa Said:

Aside from Occupational Therapy, what can you major in if you want to be an occupational therapist?

We Answered:

As far as I know, you have to major in OT. Human growth and development are pre-reqs and classes as part of the major. There are many specific classes offered that you can only take if you have been accepted into the school program of occupational therapy.
Check out some schools websites. Go to www.aota.org for a complete list of schools.
Good luck

We Answered:

i know there are bachelors programs for occupational therapy. SUNY buffalo has a bs/ms option so i know u can pick a minor of course it depends on the school. but pyschology or sociology would be great choices for OT majors. just check to see if u can take a minor.

Is occupational therapy a good major to go into?

We Answered:

I think so..but maybe I am bias as I am a COTA.
Right now the job market is good for OT's and COTA's.
You also have diverse areas you can go into such as skilled nursing or rehab clinics, early interverntion to work with kids 0-3 or schools to work with kids ages 3-21 to name a few.
I am not going to ramble on about schooling as you can look that up on the AOTA.org website. But to be a good OT you have to be creative, flexiable and have good observation skills. LOL if you want to help people but you are anal maybe you would like to look into PT. Not saying anything bad about PT's but they are very structured people most of the time..less flexiable in thier thinking. (Which is very helpful in the world of PT)
I have worked in the 3 main areas and I love the ability to help people gain independence through fun, meanigful activities.
Gaining independence is the key in OT.
You can email me for more if ya like and I can tell you more about the differences between OTR and COTA and the different aspects of OT.
Advance for OT is also a good magazine that could maybe give you a glimpse of the world of OT.

Discuss It!
