Occupational Therapy Physiotherapy

Sidney Said:

how does the physiotherapy and occupational therapy differs?

We Answered:

physical therapy is working with muscles and to help you regain walking, standing, and running skills. Occupational is working to regain motor skills to dress, co-ordinate movements like eating and writing, etc.

Katie Said:

Should i major in physiotherapy or occupational therapy?

We Answered:

Well, the two are very similar but have some main differences.
With both OT and PT, you have much more patient interaction than being an MD, like you said.
With OT, you will do things that relate to the every day functioning of the pt (ADL's or activities of daily living). These are things like teaching a patient who just had hip surgery how to take a shower without breaking hip precautions, or showing them tools to use to help put their socks on. With patients who might have a neurological disorder, you help them fine tune their motor control. OT's can work almost anywhere a PT does, but they are more seen with little kids or in hospitals or home health.
As for PT's, this can be in outpatient clinics as well. They do the more functionality like getting in and out of the house, walking, running, returning back to sports, things like that. It is really about what interests you more. I knew that helping to dress people and shower them was not really something that sounded like what I wanted, which was a small help is my confirmation that PT was what I wanted. I also did about a thousand hours of volunteer and paid work with PT's, so I knew that was the right choice. Whatever you choose, don't do it for the money. Both fields pay well and you need to enjoy what you do. If you don't, your patience with your patients will be sacrificed.

I wish you the best of luck choosing and good luck!
