Occupational Therapy Position

Shane Said:

Master's in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

If you have your bachelors in OT, why are you trying to volunteer? Apply for a job. Start working and apply for the Masters. If time and resources allow, I'd keep working while I got my Masters, then the company I already work for might advance me, or I still have a job while I'm looking for a position to use my Masters.

Speech Pathology vs occupational therapy?

We Answered:

Both are in very high demand, and will be even more so as the Boomer Generation ages.
I've seen far more positions in pediatrics for speech pathologists, particularly in the schools.
Speech pathologists in some markets typically make a bit more money than OTs. See salary.com for rates in your area.

Occupational Therapist?

You might consider working in a special education classroom as a teaching assistant (paraprofessional.) I teach a K-2 special ed class, and all of my students receive OT services to address their fine and gross motor needs, as well as their sensory issues. So we not only work directly with an OT, we also give the students activities to help them with their development in these areas.

You could also look into working in a convalescent or rehab facility, for people who are recovering from illnesses or injuries. Or you could look into a job as a home health aide, visiting people with OT needs in their homes. You would get hands-on experience in these settings, too.
