Occupational Therapy Prerequisites

Shirley Said:

I need help in deciding between a Masters of Clinical Psychology or a Masters in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

If you are equally interested in both fields I would lean more in the direction of OT.

I tell most students who are interested in working in the field of psychology they should pursue their Ph.D.

More people have higher specialized degrees these days. In this popular field, students have more options if they continue their studies through to a Ph.D.

Good luck!

Maria Said:

Which school in Canada has the best Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy program?

We Answered:

Best depends on what you consider important - all these schools have physiotherapy programs -
and all are excellent universities.

* Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS : School of Physiotherapy
* McMaster University : School of Rehabilitation Science
* Queen's University : School of Rehabilitation Medicine
* University of Alberta : Rehabilitation Medicine
* University of British Columbia : School of Rehabilitation Sciences
* University of Manitoba : School of Medical Rehabilitation
* University of Saskatchewan : School of Physical Therapy
* University of Toronto : Department of Physical Therapy
* University of Western Ontario : Faculty of Health Sciences

What you need to get in depends on the school, so you would have to check their admission requirements to be sure, but in general, in your first degree you need to include completion of a 4 yr degree with specific courses - here are the ones from UofAlberta:
1. English (3 credits) (A general course with some assessment of writing skills, can be at introductory level)
2. Statistics (3 credits) (A general introductory course covering basic statistical concepts)
3. Psychology (6 credits) (A minimum of 3 credits should be for an introductory/general course)
4. Human Anatomy (3 credits)*
5. Human Physiology (6 credits)*

* Course must focus on HUMAN physiology and anatomy eg.) textbook used should be human physiology or human anatomy

They also look at volunteer activity, and require an interview.

Go to the Physiotherapy website at each of the universities you are considering, and check into specific admission requirements there.

Tommy Said:

Is Occupational Therapy a difficult degree?

We Answered:

If you are willing to work hard, show up to class and study you can do it. I went to a high school with low expectations and was worried about failing in college. I did great because I tried my best. Some schools provide tutors for difficult classes. (we had writing advisers, math and A&P tutors that were free or at least included in tuition). We also formed study groups. If other students saw me doing well I was also asked for help which I had no problems giving.

When students fails it was usually because they didnt do the work, came unprepared, missed classes or put in little effort. Even if you have one class that you stuggle with, doing well in all the other classes will make up for it. (hint- take physics at a jr college.

Is Occupational Therapy a competitive field?

We Answered:

hey, go for it! you can always try it out, see if you like it and go from there. no one has perfect grades in everything and grades are subjective depending on the teacher. if you are interested and you have enjoyed your experiences in volunteering; what harm is there in at least checking it out? apply and see what happens, then decide your next move. good luck!
