Occupational Therapy School

What is Occupational Therapy school like?We Answered:
Hi there,If occupational therapy is a field you are passionate about getting into, then school is awesome. I am going into my second semester of OT school, and am loving it so far. It is a LOT of work, but all very enjoyable. I go to the University of Illinois at Chicago. So far, the program is a lot of theory. The workload is heavy and includes a lot of reading (textbook and scholarly articles), group projects, writing research papers, and studying for exams. You also get the opportunity to go observe different settings and interview OTs in various settings.
If you are interested in an OT grad program, you should definitely do some volunteering/observation in the field. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have, just send me an email- smolin4@gmail.com

How can i look good for Occupational Therapy School? We Answered:
I looked in to OT when deciding on a career. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have as many volunteer hours in therapy as possible plus it's fun to volunteer in your feild! Different schools require different shadowing so look it up by school but I think 25 hours is about average. I majored in Speech Language and Hearing Science and you had to observe in the school's clinic for 25 hours before you could graduate. The American Occupational Therapy Association is the best place to get all your questions answered and find a list of schools! Good luck OT is very rewarding!Wesley Said:
how would a student requiring occupational therapy services in school get access to an OT?We Answered:
As I understand it, anyone can contact the CCAC for request for personal service. Any CCAC website will give you this information. For services to be provided within a school, in our case, the school contacted the CCAC for O/T service for my son in the classroom, but only after it was determined as necessary support (by the school). We did need to provide, to the school, documentation of previous therapy received, and a referral from the centre from which he had been receiving service. Once the CCAC has all the information by the school, they contact the parents with an outline of the services that will be provided.

Can I get into an Occupational therapy school with around a 2.7 GPA?We Answered:
It depends on which school you want to apply to. Some are more competitive than others. Figure out a few prospective schools and look at their websites. Some programs will list the average GPAs and SAT scores of their majors. If this information is not listed, you can email them for it. This will give you an idea of which schools are realistic for you. However, don't be deterred if you think you don't have a chance. There is no cookie cutter applicant that is accepted. All you can do is try.Salvador Said:
How can I better my Chance of getting accepted for an Occupational Therapy School? We Answered:
Most schools require about 40 hours of shadowing. Most colleges say on their website how many hours are required, but that's a good ballpark figure. Volunteer hours in the community look good, but in most cases they won't make or break you. Your GPA is good; the other big factors are going to be your references and your GRE scores. Most schools require 3 references, 1-2 of those should be professors, one preferably your academic advisor. Things like if you show up for class and if you're late turning in assignments will definitely effect the way you're viewed in the application process. If you're applying to a school that's halfway decent, they WILL check your references. Most schools state they want a GRE score of 1000, but they're usually flexible down to 850 or so if everything else checks out. Also, exercise science is a great major for building into OT. Most schools will favor you a little more highly if you have a handful of psych classes in there as well, but it isn't a requirement to have more than 9 hours or so, which was probably required of you anyway.
They're also going to keep in mind what you're doing with that time from the time you graduate until you apply to school. Are you just jerking around and taking it easy, or are you using the time productively to volunteer or work in the medical field to get some hands on patient experience? If you're working down some student loan debt, it would look good if you could do even one day a month of volunteering at a local hospital, school, or brain injury clubhouse so you can emphasize your interest in the field. Hope that helps.
