Occupational Therapy Stroke

Wayne Said:

Hemorrhagic stroke?

We Answered:

Well, sweetie, I work in a Nursing Home and in my opinion, it does have to do with the person. It also has to do with the support system she will have.
We do rehab also, and what I see is the people with the most support do best.
There are some that come in everyday at therapy time just to give them support. There is nothing like losing your independance all at once like she did. She will be angry at first, just turn her anger into desire to work with the therapists. They can really do wonders if the person is willing.
Our facility encourages family to even come and eat meals with them, join in the activities etc.
Support is the key. Good luck, it sounds as though you are willing to do whatever it takes for her!!

Any Occupational Therapists?

We Answered:

Wow. I have no idea where you got your information, but go to a school with a special Ed dept. and ask to spend a day with the OT or COTA. You will see how important they are. Especially with Autistic students. I am a speech clinician and have nothing but respect for our OT and COTA. They know so much about the fine motor skills involved in cutting. writing, speaking, swallowing, etc. And about the deep pressure and sensory needs of Autistic kids. Don't get discouraged. Find a happy one and hang out. It will change your view.

I have never heard of them being phased out in our area.

Perry Said:

what exercises would you suggest for someone who has lost some function in their hand due to a stroke?

We Answered:

when I crushed 2 disks in my neck, my left arm and hand were partially paralyzed. After my operation to make new disks, the Dr. told my I would never really regain use of my left hand, fingers, or my arm. I didn't like that idea. I used the ball for squeezing, I continued to work on the computer, although, my left hand was a lot slower than my right..........eventually, it caught up! I continued to play the piano, as well........although, the doctor told me it would not help. My left hand had a hard time catching up to my right hand, but, after months of daily working on it, IT DID! I had a grandbaby coming, and all I could think of, was that I would not be strong enough in my left hand to even hold the new baby. The way I was, I could not lift a coffee cup with my left hand, without just dropping it! AHA! By the time the baby arrived, my left hand and I had no problems.................well, except for the arthritis that I expected to have, anyway! Do whatever your father enjoys doing with his hands..............and do it daily. The ball is good, but, using the fingers separately is really important, I think. It did work for me. He can be, too!
