Pediatric Occupational Therapist?

We Answered:

Hi, my cousin graduated as an occupational therapist about 5 years ago, and she specializes in pedatrics.

Let's start with the schooling. You need a strong science background during you undergradate work. Things like anatomy and physiology / biology will be important things for you to learn, because it deals with the human body. I am a pre-pharmacy student, and i many of my classmates are going into occupational therapy. It is NOT exteremly difficult, but there will be many many weekend-less days and nights because you need to study a lot.
From then you need to apply to a professional school that deals with occupational therapy, here you will learn the stuff you need to know, out in the working field. Competition is very very very very very difficult, AVERAGES at a 3.5 gpa the higher the better, also voluntering in your occupation can help you get into the school you want. Once again you need time and dedication and a lot of sleepless nights in graduate school. But the rewards will soon come.

Well my aunty basically works with disabled children, who were born with birth defects or who are battling some type of disesase that paralyzed their small movements. Since she works with kids, she often comes to me to come up with fun activies to get their small movements working again. For example this one boy had problems with his finger/hand coordination. We decided to do arts and crafts with him and bake(prepare food such as cookies where u have to roll the dough, cut out the shapes) while at the same time excersing his hand coordination.

Remember working with children is difficult at times, they dont listen!!! And not all activies are going to be fun. You have to be a patient person who loves kids to death. Occupational therapy is about 8 years of schooling, you have a long road ahead of you but in the sense of accomplishment and helping children is the most amazing feeling.

Melinda Said:

should a pediatric occupational therapist invite a client to her wedding if shes gotten to know the kids and?

We Answered:

I wouldn't. I have doctors that I consider myself good friends with, been my doctor my whole life, they see my whole family, etc and so forth-- but it's still only a professional relationship. It would be weird to be invited to his wedding unless we had a casual friendship as well as just professional.

Juanita Said:

whats the difference between a pediatric physical therapist and a pediatric occupational therapist?

We Answered:

Physical Therapy focuses on the lower extremities
Occupational Therapy focuses on the upper extremities

PT focuses on gait, walking, mobility
OT focuses on dexterity of your hands to perform everyday tasks like cooking, hygeine, etc.

Your Major would be Physical or Occupational Therapy with emphasis in pediatrics.

Ricky Said:

What is a good undergraduate major if I would like to become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist?

We Answered:

If you can find a place that offers the bachelors in health science degree then that would be fantastic. That is what my university offers for the undergrad portion of OT school.

Although since you are already working towards your Child Development undergrad, I would just stick with that. This could serve as the launching pad for your master's in occupational therapy. Each school is different and looks for different things in an application, so you look pretty good so far- best of luck!!
