Physical Therapist Education

Rodney Said:

What are the education requirements to become a fully licensed physical therapist in Britian?

We Answered:

Well here they are called physiotherapists. A minimum of a degree and then registration with the governing body.

Claire Said:

What education do you need to be a physical therapist?

We Answered:

You can get a degree in business but you will also need to take

1 year of each course with labs

gen bio, gen physics, gen chem, A and P, also math, stats, psy, kinesiology, exercise physiology is also helpful.

Also be aware that the majority of schools are now DPT and those that are not are in the process of converting. It is three years beyond a BS degree.

Business would not be my choice but if you want to open your own clinic it may be helpful. In the past before the DPT, many students got MBAs in order to do management or own their own clinic

Cory Said:

Should I become a Physical Therapist Assistant or a Physical Education (k-12) teacher?

We Answered:

I graduated with my B.S. in kinesiology and now enrolled in a PTA program. I have had a couple classmates go the P.E. route, but like you mentioned, finding work it extremely difficult. I actually know of two people who got their teaching credentials, taught for 2 years, and both returned to school for a career in P.T.

Esther Said:

Physical Therapist continuing education?

We Answered:

continuing education is very important in this field. Research is always making changes to our current profession and technology continues to change. Think about this: if you were going in for a surgery, would you want to have a surgeon who has never taken another continuing education opportunity? Not me, I want him/her to be at the top of their game!

As far as how often and how much is required, it varies by state. It usually is 20-40 hours every two years. ...typically a weekend course or two...However, many activities can count as continuing ed...home study courses, journal clubs, etc. It's not much, really. Believe me, once you get out in the field, you will welcome continuing ed opportunities.

Cassandra Said:

What education is necessary to become a physical therapist?

We Answered:

In the US, it requires graduation from an accredited physical therapy program that results in either a masters or doctorate level degree.

The admission requirements vary slightly, but undergraduate course work should focus on the pre-requisites courses that are required for the program you wish to attend. This usually includes some variation of 3 semesters of bio, 2 of physics and chem, 1 of anatomy and physiology, trig/calc, statistics, and 3 semsters of pscyhology. Most of your general education requirements also need to be finished by the time you apply to the professional phase of the program.

Most programs have competitive entrance...meaning, even if you meet the minimum requirements, this does not garauntee admittance into the program. For instance, most schools require a 3.0 GPA to be admitted into the program, but realistically, most students who are actually admitted have a GPA 3.6 or higher. Traditionally, 300-400 applicants apply for 30-40 slots (depending on the school). Yet, in recent years, application at many schools has dropped...making it theoretically easier to get into the program in the last few years.

Once admitted into the professional phase of the program, the coursework usually takes 3 years and one summer to complete...although this may vary from school to school. Total time from undergrad to graduation is usually 6 or 7 years...

Shannon Said:

What is the education process to become a physical therapist?

We Answered:

Exercise science is a good major for PT. I have the links for the schools specifica. Make sure that you have taken one year of the following with labs

gen chem, gen bio, gen physics, A and P. also math potentially up to calc, stats, and psy.

if you have time med term, cadaver anatomy, and kinesiology

You may need to take the gre

You need volunteer hours in a PT clinic

Make sure you have about a 3.5 GPA.

Many exercise science majors may take the cSCS exam which may increase your chances into PT school but will help you in the future if you work in orthopedics when you graduate from PT school.

Good luck
