Physical Therapy Programs

Kimberly Said:

Are physical therapy programs hard to get into? If they are what do I have to do to get it?

We Answered:

Programs are traditionally very competitive. Unless you enter a direct admit program as a freshman (which usually requires you are a top student in high school), you have to complete a bachelor's degree, but also have to include the prerequisite courses. This typically involves a year each of bio, chem and physics, but also anatomy and physiology, calc/trig and statistics and psychology. Once you've done this, you apply for acceptance into the professional phase. Completing the minimum requirements in no way guarantees your admission.

GPA is highly weighted during admissions. While most programs have a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0, the GPA of most students in a program is usually at least 3.5.

Most programs also require that you take the GRE and complete observation hours. You may also have to submit a writing sample and sit for an interview.

Competition also depends on the number of applicants to the number of seats. It's not uncommon for a program to get 200-300 applicants for 30 seats. Acceptance rates of 10-30% are not unheard of.
