Private Occupational Therapy

Connie Said:

Does it matter what kind of school you go to for Occupational therapy?

We Answered:

Hey, i start my OT program next month. It's a private school, but honestly, it doesn't really matter what school you go to because every student has to pass the same national exam as all other students. As long as the school is accredited, then it shouldn't matter. Sure, some schools are more popular than others, but that's the same for any program. While I was volunteering at a certain hospital, there was an OT who graduated from a public state college and he told me he gets paid the same as the other OTs he works with who graduated from private schools. I got accepted to a private school and I chose that because of the enviornment and the small teacher to student ratio. No matter what u choose, even if it's an expensive school, you'll be making enough $$ as an OT to pay it off and not feel broke lol.

Gary Said:

is a PhD in occupational therapy worth it?

We Answered:

you need to earn an entry level OT degree. This is generally a masters degrees. Then you take the national license exam.

You can also get a clinical doctorate just as in PT which is the OTD as oppose to the DPT. PT is now the norm. I do not know any OT who has done the OTD.

A PhD is a research based doctorate. You can get a PhD in anything. Yes most university want this degree for new faculty to teach in their OT programs.

occupational Therapy assistants need advice......?

We Answered:

Please don't get thrown by the term 'assistant' ;) as a friend had gone to school for OTA and the job can be quite mentally and physically draining. The job includes helping patients transfer from point 'a' to point 'b' such as from the bed to the bathroom commode. She found it rewarding as well but the title is not really accurate to the tasks that the ot assistant does. To work in private practice, the ota (and otr/occupational therapist, registered) typically needs a couple of years experience since private practice tends to be much more autonomous in terms of collaboration among colleagues.

For more general career info: www.bls.gov/oco and search 'occupational therapy assistant' or such.
