Schools Of Occupational Therapy

Tom Said:

What to do in high school to get into Occupational Therapy in the future?

We Answered:

Go to a rehab center and talk to the OT's there. Ask if you can shadow them for a couple of hours, too. In my opinion, personality counts for a Lot in that field.

Alex Said:

Anyone that went to school for Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy...?

We Answered:

Hello,
I'm an OT and glad to hear you are planning on getting your degree. It is a great profession if you love helping people gain the greatest level of independence and competence in their life. You could begin reading about human growth and development so you will have a head start on the basics of the physical, mental and emotional stages of development. My favorite was learning about the development of the brain and what you would expect to see as a child's brain develops various capacities for thought and action. If you've never studied psychology it might be good to become familiar with terminology both for normal and abnormal psychology. It might also be helpful to start reading the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. You could ask a local OT if you could borrow some. Don't try reading the real technical articles, but just read about the profession and what's happening with insurance providers etc.
Well, I hope I haven't overwhelmed you. Do you know where you are going to school. I went to USC and loved it!
Actually, the best thing you could do this summer would be to volunteer in an OT department or at least arrange a few visits to observe treatment. Best of everything to you!!
