Careers In Pharmacy

Possible Pharmacy careers?

Erik Said:

Is a career in Pharmacy possible for an average person? What other careers are close to pharmacy?

We Answered:

well, i don't know how much being a pharmacist depends on personality so, you can throw the whole 'average person becoming a pharmacist' thinking out the window. anyone can become a pharmacist, or a scientist, or a lawyer, or a race car driver if they are willing to put the justified work in. if you are willing to study hard for pharmacy school, then you can become a pharmacist. that's all.

aside from that, look for a career that YOU like rather than the one your parents are picking for you. if at all possible, work at a pharmacy and see how you like it. pharmacists make good money (roughly $100,000 / year) BUT the days are lengthy. at my store, the pharmacists work 12 hours shifts daily and don't really get breaks either. you have to deal with all sorts of people (good and bad), deal with insurance issues, etc. so, there are things that can burn you out mentally. make sure you know what the pharmacy degree entails and where you plan to go with it.

i don't know of any fields that would be all too close to pharmacy. i mean it's kind of like saying that chemistry and biology are similar fields. it is true that both are science fields, but many people will agree that they are not at all the same (or even close to it). pharmacology is a major that would kind of work in this field. again though, pharmacology (from what i understand) revolves more around discovering and finding new drugs and testing them. so, your work place would be at a pharmaceutical company rather than a retail pharmacy chain or a hospital.

once again, reading your comments, i see that you want to look for a research oriented field and i think pharmacology would be that route. pharmacologists do not make as much money as the pharmacists though (for the most part). if you still want to go for becoming a pharmacist, look into what research oriented fields a pharmacist can get into. my guess is that a pharmacist can also find research work at pharmaceutical companies and drug development.

Victoria Said:

What is a better career pharmacy or social work?

We Answered:

Social work is a difficult field. Don't think it's just child protective services. I'm in my last year of Social Work and I love the field I'm in. You are trying to make a difference in people's lives. Pharmacy is different, you're supplying the medical side. Social work is more the social, personal side of helping people with their personal issues, not just druging them up. You can see my bias.

Careers: Pharmacy or Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

Do pharmacy, thats what my sister did, she loves it. She never took physics in hs, but lots of chem. If you need physics, which I don't think you do, you can take it in college, but go and "do drugs professionally" haha
Good luck!

careers in public health and pharmacy?

We Answered:

If anything, this would be a good thing for you to do on the side of your pharmacy career. You could visit colleges, high schools and middle schools educating students about a healthy lifestyle. A motivational speaker and this pays really, really well (just imagine that side money). Have you thought about working at local high schools in the medical office where they do the physical exams for students and all other sorts of things?
