Hospital Pharmacist Job

Nora Said:

Path to become a pharmacist in the research or hospital setting.?

We Answered:

I thought I answered this question earlier today. Or was that someone else asking? No, you don't choose what type of Pharmacist you are going to become while in school. You FIRST become a Pharmacist, and then AFTER you graduate, you search out work in the area of interest you want to work in. Yes, you would need a college degree in a science field; chemistry would be great. From there you can apply to Pharmacy College. Different schools offer different degrees, and technically they are all Doctor of Pharmacy, but it is a rare Pharmacist who refers to himself as such. Most of them refer to themselves as Registered Pharmacist, R.Ph., or simply Pharmacists There is no higher degree, but of course you can always earn multiple degrees in related fields. For example, you might become a R.Ph., and you could also continue your education and get a degree in anything else... Microbiology, for example, or Molecular Biology, or perhaps also become an RN. But if you work for awhile, you'll discover what specific area is most satisfying to you. Work at Walgreens, work at a small or large hospital, work in Walmart, whatever. The work is all similar. OR, you could work for a pharmaceutical company that manufactures drugs, and they're probably going to seek out specific further education pertaining to what kind of drugs they make. I would suggest you just get your R.Ph. first, work in the field for a couple of years, and THEN make your choice where you want to wind up. You're in High School now? When I was in High School I wanted to be an astronaut... or a cowboy... or maybe a fireman... or a railroad engineer.... or perhaps a race car driver...or a rock star....

Cassandra Said:

How do hospitals conduct criminal background checks?

We Answered:

the laws that apply to background checks apply only to consumer reporting agencies or similar third party agencies, IF the hospital does a check themselves they may consider any information they find. regardless of if this is dismissed, expunged, sealed etcetera once any information makes it in/on to the Internet it is there to stay and may be found eventually........

but don't worry to much because most hospitals do NOT perform their own checks.

the limits set by the California code and the federal law, FCRA, is 7 years or the statutes of limitations for the crime involved.

many positions in health care REQUIRE the use of law enforcement checks, not the common consumer report done by hundreds of companies in the US.

you should always be open and honest in discussing your past.........
look at it this way;
if this was dismissed and you have nothing to hide why try to hide it or neglect to mention it?
what does this say to the hospital if they discover this information?
if you will lie about something so meaningless and unimportant what would happen if the issues were of great importance. if you fail to be honest about this and it is eventually discovered you lose all creditability and every other question you answered comes under scrutiny and suspicion....

being less then honest or lying about small matters tells employers you will do whatever you see as in "your best interest"......

just be honest and explain what happened and what you learned from the situation. take ownership of your past, show how this one mistake has made you the best pharmacist that could be hired....

EDIT:
if 'Smiling' actually knew what was covered by FCRA that ridiculous part of the answer would not be there...
FCRA covers ALL consumer reports NOT just credit
see sections 603 and 604 of the Act at:

Eugene Said:

Is the job of a pharmacist rewarding, stressful, or boring?

We Answered:

I am a chain pharmacist and can tell you it can be extremely stressful depending how busy the store is. If you like working nights, holidays and weekends and taking crap from the public, by all means become a pharmacist. I assure you it is not at all like it used to be.
