Is Pharmacy A Good Career

Richard Said:

is pharmacy a good career?

We Answered:

Ya, pharmacy is a great career. My dad is a pharmacist and he is well respected. Everyday he drives an 1.5 hours to work (even though he doesn't need to) and still has plenty of time each week. My dad owned a business while being a pharmacist for a few years. Being a pharmacist, you have plenty of job opportunities, you don't just have to work in a hospital. You can work more than 1 jobs at once if you want to. Pharmacy is very lucrative too. You can go to any pharmacy school and still get a great job. Lastly, while it is not as profitable as being a surgeon/doctor, it is less years in college.

Why is pharmacy a good career choice?

We Answered:

Pharmacist is a good job to have. I have a friend that goes to Campbell University in NC majoring it it. They make a good sum of money and if you like chemistry it's an excellent career choice. There are some cons though. If you're working in a drugstore such as Rite Aid or any other drugstore for that matter, you run the risk of having a pharmacy technician, someone who is not well educated with pharmaceuticals, may fill a prescription wrong and someone may be injured or killed because of it. Make sure where ever you are you keep a tight log on who fills what so you don't get sued and loose your license. There are also some of the not-so-friendly customers. I'd recommend working in a hospital unless you desire that connection with your customers.

Pharmacy technician: Good career or bad career?

We Answered:

well, i don't have experience in the field but i've been interested in pharmacy for a while so i can give you some answers. the pay depends on things like seniority, location, employer etc. but the average pay in 2008 was about $13 an hour. i'd say prospects are good, pharmacists can be overworked with the amount of people coming in daily and they need the techies help as much as possible. i don't know if you being middle aged will be a problem. techies tend to be female but the actual pharmacists themselves are pretty mixed gender wise. it shouldn't be hard if you're a people person, are good at math(maybe), and can work with computers. that's about all i can tell you. techies are usually pharmacy students who need a job, so many end up moving on up and out of being a techie. it's an alright job but i'd say the pay is low for a 2 year degree. you could probably easily find a job that pays 10 bucks without a degree. you might be able to go for dental hygiene or nursing. those pay way better than pharm techs but they are also female dominated.

Diane Said:

Is pharmacy a good career option for someone who has a good memory but not a great understanding power?

We Answered:

Probably not, since mere memorization of which drugs to prescribe may not be enough in pharmacy. You can try to taking some pre-pharmacy courses at your university to see how interested/how well you do in the course. Science is not only about memorizing which chemicals go where - you also have to understand how the entire process works before you can successfully prescribe drugs to other people. If you are unsure about this option, perhaps it's not the best career path, since you are putting the lives of patients at stake.
