Job Of A Pharmacist

Adrian Said:

Questions about a pharmacist job?

We Answered:

My dauhgter is currently taking pre-requisites for Pharmacy hoping to be accepted into the Pharmaceutical program. We are learning alot & have found that it is indeed costly, but rewarding. You should do an online search for Pharmacy education & just begin seeing what the different universities offer & what to expect as far as credits/classes/ & any transferrable credits...etc there is plenty for you to begin checking out...The web site www.nacdsfoundation.org is one of many you can check out about the various tuition paid with employment opportunity following graduation...Remember that you will be committing yourself for quite a big deal when you choose to take on such financial responsibility as well as entering Pharmacy [doctorate]! So be sure this is what you REALLY want to do...Good luck! Oh and YES, you of course need strength in English/writing/grammar/reading my goodness , please do further checking!

I want to be a Pharmacist, How is the job?

We Answered:

First of all, books and drugs are not the same thing.. so amazon.com is an irrelevant example. Do you actually think people will BUY prescription drugs online? lol.. anyways..

I am studying pharmacy right now ..

I had a 3.8 GPA in high school and I applied for the 6 year program, where grades do matter.. you need to have a minimum GPA of 3.5 to get into a 6 year program.
Pharmacists start at around $100,000 a year.. unless you specialize, which I am.. I'm specializing in Oncology Pharmacy and I will be making $130,000 - 140,000.
Pharmacy schools are pretty competitive. It is somewhat hard to get into pharmacy schools because so many people are applying and there are usually only a certain number of spots for prospective students available for each year.
I would not say being a pharmacist is very stressful. I think being a pharmacist is a great job for somebody who desires a normal work schedule (8-10 hour shifts) and who is planning on having a family because it allows time for that. BUT.. becoming a pharmacist will be stressful. You have to put in a lot of time studying if you want to make it, especially in the last 3 years.. the classes will be hard, so be prepared to do pretty much nothing but study. :)
If you are applying for a 6 year program, you will be in school for 6 years. The first two years are sort of like "pre-pharmacy" and the next 4 are when you really get into doing pharmaceutical work. If you decide to specialize, it is usually a year or two after college, where you do a residency program say, at a hospital.
In my opinion, there are no downsides to being a pharmacist. I mean, you do not spend all of your life in school, and you start out making six digits when you are out of school. Also, you have a life outside of work. Before deciding to be a pharmacist, I wanted to be a physician.. but when I looked at how much dedication and time goes into it, I realized that I would not have time for anything besides work. I have worked with pharmacists and I honestly never heard one complain about their job!

Good luck!
