Agnes Said:

career opportunities?

We Answered:

Hi,

Well, the good thing is that you are discovering this now while you're still pretty young. Most people don't realize this until their too old to make a change.

I had a very good experience with a career counselor but everyone is different.

Informational interviews would be good for you to find out more about careers you may have interest in. Or you can try this site my career counselor told me about:

http://www.jobpodge.com

It's a site of real life job experiences. It's people's first hand view of their jobs. This could help in addition to informational interviews. Hope this helps!

Typically, the person in charge of lots of pharmacists IS a pharmacist.

Gertrude Said:

What career opportunities are available to biochemistry majors (what is biochemistry?)?

We Answered:

Biochemistry is basically the chemistry of life. The first classes you take are chemistry, general bio, etc. But once you get to the real biochemistry classes it can get pretty cool. My favorite part was learning about the chemical structure of proteins and DNA. There is also molecular biology, which may or may not be part of your major, which is basically taking a high-tech look at how genes are controlled.

As far as career opportunities, it depends on what you think an exciting career is. There are a lot of basic research jobs in molecular biology, although this is an area I'm not personally interested in. You would be qualified to work as a chemist, as a forensics analyst, and at biotech companies. I'm afraid that science doesn't pay particularly well as a career. The only way to be paid close to what a physician makes would be to get a PhD and snag a job as the head of a major research lab.

If you don't like chemistry, this isn't the major for you. I had to take 3 years of chemistry, which is one more year than is required for pre-med. Not to mention the biochemistry classes which are heavily based in chemistry.

It's not really as big of a decision as you are making it out to be. Unless you go to Cal Poly SLO you should be able to easily change your major if you change you mind. And even if you graduate and aren't happy, you can get a graduate degree in something completely different, like an MBA. Heck, I'm thinking about an masters in library science.
