Pharmacist Education Needed

Constance Said:

What kind of education do you need to become a pharmacist?

We Answered:

To become a pharmacist, post-secondary education length is on average 6-8 years. Taking your prereqs at a CC is looked down upon. A degree of some kind for pharmacy has been required since the end of the 19th century.

To become a pharmacist what education do you need and how long does to take?

We Answered:

I went to Purdue, but I didn't study Pharmacy. I know that there, you went to pre-pharmacy for two years and then had to take a test and pass it and be accepted into the pharmacy school. If you weren't admitted, you had to wait another year to try again.

Once admitted, you went through the School of Pharmacy for four additional years (6 years total).

From my friends going through it, there is an awful lot of memorization of drugs, and their interactions. I didn't have that kind of memory. I took the easier path of engineering ;)

Paula Said:

How much education does it take to be a pharmacist, and what is needed to open you own pharmacy?

We Answered:

Four years of college, assuming you get A's in Calc, Bio, Chem, Physics and Organic Chem.

Good score on the Pharmacy version of the MCAT.

Four years of pharmacy school.

At least 5 years of real pharmacy experience.

Small town that hasn't been monopolized by CVS, Eckerd's, Walgreens, RiteAid, grocery store pharmacies.

Your best bet might be to buy an existing small-town pharmacy and make it better.

what education do you need for being a pharmacist?

I suspect pharmacy may be marginally more interesting than economics but (for the UK) googling found:-

Pharmacy - What qualifications do I need?
It is always best to check the precise entry requirements of each individual school of pharmacy.

However, in general, to qualify as a pharmacist you will need:

A-B grade A-levels in chemistry and two of biology/mathematics/physics, although students may be also considered with chemistry or biology (and one other subject) or the equivalent in Scottish Highers.
a four-year masters degree in pharmacy from a school of pharmacy
one year's practical training in a community or hospital pharmacy
to pass a registration exam.
Degree course
All UK pharmacy degrees are approved by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

Although most courses are geared to those with A-levels in chemistry and two of biology/mathematics/physics, students may be also considered with chemistry or biology (and one other subject). You need basic literacy and numeracy skills (eg; GCSE in English language and mathematics). If you have taken the Scottish Highers the Scottish equivalent to A levels you will need passes in chemistry, maths (with either calculus or statistics), English and either physics, biology, human biology or geography.

Approximately one third of students admitted to schools of pharmacy have other qualifications. These include Irish School Leaving Certificate, National or Higher National Certificate/Diplomas, International Baccalaureate, Access qualifications.

Course syllabus
The course comprises four main subjects:

Origin and chemistry of drugs. Emphasis is placed on the study of synthetic drugs, though drugs from natural sources are also studied.
Preparation of medicines. This includes pharmaceutics, which is the study of the formulation of drugs.
Action and uses of drugs and medicines. This covers physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology.
Pharmacy practice. This covers the supply of medicines and provision of advice, including the laws and standards applying to pharmacy. It will include managing symptoms, promoting healthy lifestyles and advising on all aspects of drug therapy and medicines usage.
Pharmacy students are then required to work for one year and pass an exam before they can register as a pharmacist in the United Kingdom.

Education in order to be a Pharmacist?

We Answered:

You'll need a bachelor's degree in biochemistry or some science major. Most of the pharmacy programs right now are six-year combos where you get your bachelors, masters; and doctor of pharmacy degree all in only six years. Good deal! The most important couses will be chemistry i, ii, and iii, biology I, II, and III, and even computer science. I assure you, it's not piece of cake, but then you go out into the world to make a beginning salary of at least $ 75.000.00
