Pharmacy Career In India

Sherri Said:

Is there anyone who has taken a career oriented, online course in pharmacy education?

We Answered:

In the U.S., the degree to become a pharmacist is a graduate level degree called the PharmD. degree. While there are some accelerated programs here in the U.S., most of the pharmacy schools require applicants to have completed their bachelor's degree. As far as I know, there is no PharmD program that is online. There may, however, be online programs for pharmacy technicians or pharmacy assistants, but they are not the same as a pharmacist. If you are looking at such programs, I would be very careful to check out that they are accredited by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board http://www.ptcb.org/

If you'd like more information about the differences between these titles/jobs, and their training, I'd suggest you read through the resources at The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. They are the main accrediting agency for pharmacist training programs, and frankly, a program that claims to make you a "pharmacist" that isn't accredited by them will be a waste of time because you won't be able to become a licensed pharmacist.

Look under the link labeled "for students and applicants" in the left hand column and you will find details about what exactly is needed for the PharmD degree - You will also find links to all accredited PharmD programs on the same page. There is also some excellent information about careers in pharmacy.

I want to make career in Pharmacology, which one is better, doing M.Pharmacy in India or MS from US?

We Answered:

Programs in the States are facing less and less applications from international students because of current economic and political conditions, though the demand for such students is still the same because it increases the marketability of schools. I can say from personal experience that if you do come to the U.S. for your degree, you will be well-received by the college community and given incredible opportunities to excel in your field. Best of luck with whatever you choose.

Nathaniel Said:

How do i explain to my mom to let me pursue career in pharmacy?

We Answered:

Do well in school, especially math & science. Take advantage of a Latin course, if possible, since prescriptions are written in Latin shorthand. Talk to your local pharmacist about their education & other requirements for his/her job & check out various schools that have pharmacy programs, such as Ohio Northern Univ., to let Mom know you are serious.

Pharmacists have to have as much education as doctors & have to be recertified by the state every so often. They are also under state & federal regulations. They cannot dispense certain drugs, like narcotics, without going through certain guidelines. The pharmacists that my Mom works with have PDA's with all sorts of information on medicines available on the market. Most pharmacists work during regular business hours. They aren't expected to be on call day & night, unless they work at a hospital or a pharmacy that offers that service.

Do your best not to nag her. Let your actions prove it. Even if she doesn't approve, sounds like you will make your Dad proud no matter what. Good luck!!
