Pharmacy Career Information

Pursuing a career in Nuclear Pharmacy?

We Answered:

To be a Nuclear Pharmacist you must first graduate from Pharmacy college, then enter a Nuclear Pharmacy residency. These take 12 to 18 months.
First, get admitted to Pharmacy College. It is very selective, only about 20% of applicants are accepted.
You can also work as a Pharmacy Technitian, in the field of nuclear pharmacy however space is very limited because most spots are taken by the Pharmacy residents.

Could a Pharmacist please share some useful information on their career please?

We Answered:

the previous answer mentioned a 9 to 5 job. That is NOT typical. As for the pay, it depends on where you live and work. 100K is probably the national average based on a 40 hour week. Most of the folks I work with are closer to 140K.

My favorite part of the job is bringing my skills and knowledge to bear to help people take care of themselves. My least favorite aspect is trying to help people who don't wish to help themselves.

Pharmacy school was long, hard, and sort of expensive. Things have changed though.......it is much more expensive now.

The only difficulty with jobs is deciding which one you will take. There is a nationwide shortage of pharmacists that is about 15 years running. It is about to get worse. Back in the 70's pharmacy schools were belching out a glut of pharmacists. These guys are all in there mid to late 50's and nearing retirement and represent a disproportionate amount of the pharmacists out there.

Considering going into a career in Pharmacy?

We Answered:

You'll probably need to be good at maths, chemistry and biology to get in to pharmacy school.
I think pharmacy is a very good career option because there is so much you can do with it (industry, community and hospital etc). I suggest you should try to get a part time job at a pharmacy before you apply. A lot of people find they don't want to do pharmacy after working in a community pharmacy (because most of the time they're just dispensing pills and talking to customers so alot of people don't think pharmacy is a very satisfying career.)
Pharmacists are expected to have good communication skills (since they have to talk to patients all the time) and it's important to be accurate , having a good memory would help as well and also having good time management and organisation skills.

Life Career in Pharmacy?

We Answered:

Since you are a junior in college, you probably have some idea which classes have interested you and which ones you would rather not ever see again. To be a pharmacist you should have a strong interest in chemistry and be able to do a lot of memorization. You should probably also like working with people. I am not a pharmacist but worked as a pharmacy tech for a number of months so I got some idea of what the field is like. If you are really interested in pharmacy, you should try to work at one as a cashier or technician just to get a good idea of what pharmacists have to deal with. I don't know what their salary is, but it seems to be a very decent comfortable living. No matter what you make, though, it is important to have a job that you like and that makes you feel fulfilled at the end of every day. You should talk to a career counselor or advisor at your college and see if they can give you some tests or advice that will help narrow down your interests and suggest good fields to go into. Good luck!

Pharmacy Career?

We Answered:

You can get information about pharmacy at the website of the AACP - the national organization that coordinates information about all colleges of pharmacy.

Pharmacy is a great career, but entrance to pharm schools is extremely competitive. You have to be a very good student, especially in chemistry, to be able to get into the College of Pharmacy of your choice.

Good luck with that!
