Pharmacy Career Path?

We Answered:

am currently at FAMU a university in Florida. and im also in the college of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences program 3rd year. once you start applying for collleges the fall of when your gonna graduate, just make sure that you specify that you wanna do the Pharm D. program. and they will automatically put you in the 6 year pharm d. program.

where you have two years of pre-pharmacy classes such as biology 1 and 2 with labs, physics 1 and 2 with labs, chemistry 1 and 2 with labs, organic chem 1 and 2 with labs, pre-calculus and calculus, english 1 and 2, medical terminology and some humanities..etc(humanities depends on where your going to go to college for pharmacy, meaning that each college has a different requirement for humanities subjects that will count as a humanites class) that is all in pre-pharmacy. then after your two years of pre-pharmacy (the two years in which you have to finish all of your pre requisites) then you will apply to the actual pharm d. program, which consists of your professional pharmacy classes. this is where you will get your degree from. you DO NOT get a pre-pharmacy degree. you just simply finish the courses with good grades and then apply to the college of pharmacy.

once your in the professional pharmacy years which are years 3-6 (4yrs total) you'll have 3 yrs of classes and then your last year(6th professional year) will be internship/rotations in which you have to work at hospitals and stuff and give presentations and all. after that....well, thats your 6 yrs right there.

so to answer your other questions, some college of pharmacy are hard to get into because of limited seating and an excess of applicants due to the demand in profession. but you should get in since your a B student in high school. but just make sure that you get all A's and B's in your pre-pharmacy years.

good luck to you and wish you all the best

Is pharmacy a hard field to get into, Im about to graduate grade 12 and I'm wondering possible career paths

We Answered:

I have been a pharmacist for over 30 years and I can assure you that pharmacy school is extremely hard to get into now. Besides high grades in the basics including math, chemistry, biology etc you have to score high on the national PCAT test and most colleges require a personal interview and letters of recommendation. The pay is quite good, $100,000 + but there are drawbacks. Working nights, weekends, and holidays are bad but the worst of all dealing with the public can be a difficult. Insurance has made it a nightmare at times. My suggestion is to work in a pharmacy and see exactly what it is like. If you still like it, I wish you good luck.
