As a pre-med student who works as a tech in a pharmacy part time i can shed a little light for youWhile the schooling is similar to a doctor time wise (either 2 or 4 year then 4year PharmD school) there are distinct differences. Medical Doctor education requires many years post graduate for residency, fellowships and other training methods. Pharmacy graduates are often finished with their training within one year of graduating from pharmacy school.
Also it depends on how you want to "help" personally i want to be the front line helping person (doctor) while many of my friends who just go into pharmD programs want to be the counseling and dispensing side of it.
additionally.. there is pharmaceutical research, but as for retail pharmacy, the pay is good, hours are good, people are annoying but it seems like a great career. Go for it!
