Pharmacy Tech Certification

Frances Said:

Is the Pharmacy Tech Certification Test hard?

We Answered:

you need to know more than that, the pharmacy tech cert test is based on assisting the pharmacist with more rx hands on related service vs. customer service. but it is a bit of both. anyway, go to www.ptcb.org and click exam, from there it will give you an outline on what all is on the test, i forget the exact cost, but it is costly and not money you want to throw away without preparation. Ask the pharmacist in charge at your job too, he/she will probably want to help you.

Mike Said:

Can I get my pharmacy tech certification by doing this?

We Answered:

No, you do not need to buy everything to pass the test. I would just get the study guide. I have reviewed many study guides, and their study guide is sufficient (after all, it is their test).

passing the PTCB exam qualifies you as a certified pharmacy technician. But this does NOT mean you are automatically a pharmacy technician in your state. You still have to meet your state's requirements. I have this summarized by state for you at http://www.pharmacytechnicianhq.com/ (it doesn't cost anything). You should also know that some states do require formal training in addition to national certification. Some states do not require national certification, but as a pharmacy manager, I recommend you get it anyway (helps you stand out better in interviews).

Finding employment depends on the demand for pharmacy technicians in your area. I have some tips on how to get a job and recommendations about training at the site referenced above..

Best of luck,

Marcia Said:

Where and how do I register for the Pharmacy Tech Certification National exam?

We Answered:

Pharmacy technician is a job title for a pharmacy staff member "who works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, and performs many pharmacy-related functions." [1] In most cases, job duties include providing medication and other health care products to patients, as well as working with third party and doctors' offices in resolving adjudication of patients' insurance or state program. Pharmacy technicians often do the routine tasks associated with preparing prescribed medication and providing drugs to patients, but may also do compounding of medications, verbal prescriptions and doctor calls, expense and medication orders, returns and expired credits, and non-licensed pharmacy management. Licensed pharmacists check all medications before they go to the patient, and only pharmacists may counsel patients on the proper use of medications. In the United Kingdom (UK) however, training and continuing professional development is such that pharmacy technicians are qualified to counsel patients on their medication and indeed specialist technicians participate in the running of anticoagulant clinics, dosing warfarin patients under dose banding guidance. In hospital pharmacy especially, pharmacy technicians generally oversee the operational management of the dispensary and manufacturing units, freeing the pharmacists to participate and develop extended clinical pharmacy roles, such as independent prescribing etc.
