Pharmacy Tech Duties

Marilyn Said:

would i enjoy a job as a respiratory therapist , or pharmacy tech?

We Answered:

Respiratory therapist requires alot more education than a pharmacy tech. They also deal with alot of gross duties, like suctioning phlegm from a patient's throat. If somebody coughing up a sputum sample for you doesn't make you gag, this could be a good job for you. They make good money.

Pharmacy techs count pills and get the prescriptions ready for patients. You'll work under the supervision of a pharmacist. Not sure what the pay is, but it's probably decent.

Do some research to learn more.

Best Work Setting For Pharmacy Tech??

We Answered:

Expect a pharmacy tech to work on weekdays and some weekends. From pharmacy techs I've spoken with, the ones who work at hospitals tend to enjoy their jobs than those who work retail.

Tim Said:

Is a pharmacy tech a good job?

We Answered:

I love my job as a tech. I actually got into it because I wanted to go to pharmacy school, and I feel like my experience will help me immensely when I go. It's a great place to learn the basics about medicine, especially if you work with good techs and pharmacists. Duities include customer service (in a retail setting), data entry, interpretation of sigs, dealing with insurance companies, preparing prescriptions, and, in some settings, compounding medications. It does incorporate science, but as a tech, you are not permitted to give medical advice to patients.

Overall, it's a very interesting job and if you're interested in pharmacy, it's a great job. My pharmacy is allowing me to intern there while I go to school. Most states don't require that you be certified, but some do. Check out what the requirements are in your state, and persue it. I love it.

Can a pharmacy technician go in the navy as hospital corpsman and still practice pharmacy as a technician?

We Answered:

MRSVBJ has it right. I was a HM that went to C school for pharmacy technician, but I wasn't one before I went in. The Navy provides a pretty rigorous 6 month 40 hour/week course. They would most likely require you to go through the training again. You could ask for an A school from your recruiter, but I do not think you can get a C school. Best of luck,

Questions about becoming a Pharmacy Tech?

We Answered:

1. You don't need a degree to become a pharm tech. At most, some states require certification. Most just require a high school diploma.
2. The average starting pay is $9-$11/hour. The overall average is about $13. The most I've seen a tech being paid is about $20/hour.
3. You will take in prescriptions, type them up, fill, call insurances, check people out, etc. You can do anything which does not require clinical judgment.

To apply for all types of federal and state financial aid (grants, loans, work study) you fill out the fafsa at http://fafsa.ed.gov

Note: most forms of "financial aid" are student loans that you must repay.
