Pharmacy Technician Job Openings

Howard Said:

How do I become a Pharmacy Technician?

We Answered:

I am a hospital CPhT and I received my training from my local community college. Hospitals will not hire and train you without your CPhT (you have to be licensed in order to handle drugs especially narcotics).

Training in schools can last from a month to about a year. My training was only 2 months.

Just to give you the heads up on this career: You MUST have thick skin and a strong personality to put up with this career, especially working in an inpatient pharmacy in a hospital. You put up with ALOT of crap from nurses and fellow co-workers. You are on your feet ALL day and there will be times when you have to work overtime or a double shift when needed. You will have to do a lot of multi-multi tasking and know how to handle it as well. It is a HARD career. Trust me on this. DO NOT accept employment on a flexi basis. Work only with benefits. Trust me on this too!
Schools will not be honest with you about the job and will only gloss over it.

Start volunteering at your local hospital inpatient pharmacy. Get to know how the techs do their job and see if this is something you really want to do.

Do you have a question? No one can find a job for you. We all have to do that on our own.

You can get a job at a chain pharmacy like CVS or Walgreens or Walmart as a Pharmacy technician in training. They will usually supply you with some materials to study and prepare to take the certification test. To get certified, you just have to take a test. If you want to work in a hospital, they may require that you complete a training program. First check with some of the local hospitals with what requirements they have and then check your local community colleges. I know things like IV is needed at hospitals so I'm not sure if the cc program will teach that, you may need further training. You can gain some experience while working at a pharmacy while in the program.
