To Become A Pharmacist

Brandy Said:

If i want to become Pharmacist, would i major in bio-chemistry or take a pre-pharmacy course?

We Answered:

Undertaking a biochemistry degree, may give you a better chance of gaining a place on a Pharmacy course, however it is a lot of work and expense whereas taking a Pre-Pharmacy course with plenty of work experience in a pharmaceutical environment will be cheaper and probably easier, it may lessen your chances of matriculation to a Pharmacy degree.

Therefore it is entirely up to you which one you go for.

things i need to become pharmacist?

We Answered:

What program are you interested in 0-6 or a 2+4. If applying for 0-6, take all the sciences, and get a very high ACT score. With 2+4, look at what the individual college requirements. In short, the requirements are heavy in the sciences. Some of the 2+4 schools, have early admission programs.

Wilma Said:

what would you need to major in to become a pharmacist?

We Answered:

If you only want to be a pharmacist and not get a bachelor's degree, here are the classes you should focus on (and take):

1.) Anatomy + Lab (will help you understand where drugs work in your body)
2.) Physiology + Lab <-- absolutely a must
3.) Chemistry + Lab <-- also a must
4.) Organic Chemistry + Lab <--- a huge must
5.) Biochemistry <-- need to know this one well
6.) Statistics
7.) Economy
8.) Genetics
9.) Calculus
10.) Psychology <-- nice to know
11.) Nutrition <-- also nice to know
12.) Molecular biology
13.) Microbiology + Lab <-- very helpful

Go to some pharmacy school's website and see what the pre-reqs are, each school differs slightly. The only math you need is statistics and some calculus. As for the sciences, focus on chemistry more than biology. The only biology classes that will help you later on is physio, microbiology, and probably anatomy.
