Back Physical Therapy

Alfred Said:

What is this thing they use on my back in physical Therapy?

We Answered:

It is some type of electrical stimulation unit. If done in the clinic, most likely interferential current. If it was a small hand held unit probably a TENS unit as mentioned above. If it was actually stimulating your muscle to contract it was neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

The IFC and TENS interefere with the pain transmission to the spinal cord, but it does nothing to facilitate the healing process. It's often used in a manner that allows people to have some temporary pain reduction when pain is severe and prevents them from performing any theraputic exercise. If it was NMES, it's often used in situations where there is a weak volitional muscle contraction to stimulate it to make it stronger...often used on the quads after ACL repair.

Cody Said:

For back physical therapy how many days a week should you swim?

We Answered:

Well your question is vague,as there's no definite number of days a week you need to swim when you have a back pain. First, you need to know what kind of back condition you have because there are indications and contraindications to swimming as part of therapy. There are certain movements of the spine you need to avoid when you have a condition that aggravates pain. Therefore you need those knowledge. If, however, you have a reason to believe that you have no spinal problem and you just wanna relax by swimming then I would recommend you to use a warm temperature pool and have a moderate swimming exercise at least a period of of 20 to 30 minutes. But then again there's no definite protocol as to how many minutes but I am just basing on the effect of warm water that usually occur at 20 minutes. If further questions and need and answer please clarify well your questions. Thanks
