Classes Needed For Physical Therapy

Christopher Said:

which college has a better biological science department, Lehman or City Tech for pursuing physical therapy?

We Answered:

First of lehman is a college which means it doesn't do graduate programs...a college only offers undergraduate degrees and a university offers both...city tech would be your best bet out of those two but my only precaution is that city tech is technology school not medical...

Is Physical Therapy a good career choice?

We Answered:

Well, I can't say where "can't stop searching" is receiving physio, but I can tell you the following:

The coursework is rigorous and the undergraduate work involves a lot of biology, chemistry, physics, psychology and math. Entrance into graduate school is competitive and focuses a lot on your GPA, GRE scores and other personal attributes. It's common for PT programs to only have a 20-40% acceptance rate of those who are qualified. There are direct admit programs (such as Marquette, St. Louis University) where you are guaranteed admission into the graduate phase as long as you maintain the minimum GPA; however, these are often at really expensive private schools.

The pay is comfortable, but certainly not extravagant. Do I think it's worth it to go to a private school for 6-7 years and accumulate >$150,000 in loans? No, but many students go to public school or at least do public school for the undergraduate phase and then transfer to a private school.

Physical therapy is predicted to continue to grow at a rate much faster than average. Average salary is about $66,000...which seems low, but one has to remember that the majority of PTs out there have been practicing less than 10 years and may weigh down the national average.

I'd recommend going to the APTA website at www.apta.org and review the list of schools to get a better idea of the demands.

Amanda Said:

Physical Therapy or Nursing Question?

We Answered:

Nursing (RN) is either a bachelor's or associates degree for the entry level degree. I am sure there a basic chemistry and biology requirements, but those with a BSN will be required to also complete their general education requirements.

For physical therapy, the minimum degree you must now graduate with is a master's degree, although the vast majority of programs are now doctorate level degrees. The courses required for entrance into a PT program usually involves a number of courses in your undergraduate years including a year of general chemistry, physics and biology, anatomy and physiology basic, abnormal and life span psychology, trig/calc and/or stats. etc. Once you are in the program you will take more specific courses such as gross human anatomy, physiology, neurology, orthopedics and all your hands on classes. The PT degree usually takes 6-7 years to complete.

Violet Said:

How many years of school will physical therapy take?

We Answered:

Most programs are designed to be completed in 6-7 years. Prerequisites for the graduate level program include biology, chemistry, physics, psych, anatomy and physiology and math.

For those wishing to working in elite practice settings such as the NFL, I recommend you further engage in a manual therapy fellowship and sport medicine and/or orthopedic certifications which typically take another 1-2 years each...I'd also consider returning for your PhD on top of your DPT.
