Jose Said:

If epidural steroid blocks have not eleviated your sciatic nerve pain, what treatments are recommended?

We Answered:

I have sciatic nerve pain and the only thing that relieves the pain is deep tissue massage therapy. I have went through blocks and they don't work. I find that a chiropractor or doctor of acupuncture can be of great help. But my number one recommendation is a deep tissue massage.

Tracy Said:

what do i need to go into the field of physical therapy?

this is a link to the PT professional websites student section.

It does not matter what you major in as long as you get the proper pre reqs. With bio there is a lot of classes you do not need. Botany being one.
Kinesiology, exercise science, athletic training and health science are also options and less boring in my opinion.

You need to take the following college courses
1year of the following with labs

gen bio
gen chem
gen physics
A and P
also math,stats and psy
other helpful classes can be exercise phys, kinesiology, nutrition, and Additional psy.courses

You also need volunteer hours.

Is pilates good physical therapy for spinal surgery patients?

We Answered:

Both are good but she needs to work with someone who has experience working with surgical patients. There are many types of yoga. Some are more gentle than others.

Can doing core stabilization exercises make you look or feel pregnant?

We Answered:

Although I've never heard of someone complaining of it, I suppose you might feel like this because your muscle tone is getting firmer...the bulk of muscle can become more prominent. If you have a layer of fat cells over your lower abdomen, this can especially make you look a little "fuller."

Criminal Justice vs Physical Therapy...I have no idea which path to take in my life...?

We Answered:

IMO money is important, but if you have the course/job it wouldn't be worth it.

You say you really like criminal justice but don't like the hours and 'family life is crappy' lol, have you thought of maybe studying to be a cop then sometime in the future take a different path within the law/policingworld? You could do something like criminology where you help identify the criminal, etc.

I was kind of in the same place as you at the end of 08, i ended up sticking with the course i was enrolled in and hated it then changed to something completely different. [I was doing Arts, wanted to get into graphic design but got sick and the time limit was gone...now im in psych&law.] Get a paper write down your interests, hobbies, likes/dislikes, then pros &cons of each. One will be the clear winner (:

You could always take a year off?

g'luck!

Can Physical Therapy Relieve Sciatica?

We Answered:

Sciatica is very often a reversible condition. There is some evidence that general exercises, such as conditioning and core stabilization might help someone recover from sciatica, but there is stronger evidence that people who demonstrate a "directional preference" as described by the Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy paradigm get better faster and with much less risk of injury.

Core exercises MIGHT work, but if that fails or isn't bringing you relief in a few visits, I would see someone who is certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org
