Agnes Said:

Would you advise going through a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at 29 or 30 years old?

We Answered:

That's a pretty average age for beginning a doctorate. Some students may be much older. I'm not sure what one would do with a doctorate in physical therapy, since most physical therapists just have bachelors degrees, but maybe that's just me.

Sidney Said:

-----who is in/has been in a DPT (doctor of physical therapy) program?

We Answered:

You have to take a handful of classes that are more in depth than a typical master's program: radiology, pharmacology...not that you don't get this information in an MPT program...it's just much more involved. It's a little more time than anything else.

Most MPT programs are 2-3 years in the professional phase (about 6 years total)...but it depends highly on the structure of the program...the DPT is typically 3 years (6-7 years total).

The minimum requirements to get into a DPT program are usually that you've met the prerequisite courses, obtained a BS or BA degree, completed the GRE (usually 1000 and above), GPA of at least 3.0, but preferrably higher, completed observation hours, etc.

Heidi Said:

Are there any 4 year D.P.T.(Doctor of Physical Therapy) programs out there?

We Answered:

Are you referring to getting a DPT in four years without having a BS or BA? Or are you referring to getting a DPT after attending a 4 year college and obtaining a BS or BA degree?

If the first is accurate, then I do not know of any program that could get you a BS, MS and finally a DPT in a period of only 4 years.

If the second is true then yes, there are many universities that offer graduate programs where you obtain both the Masters and Doctorate in Physical Therapy in a four year period. I believe there are even some that you can complete in three years.

In NC there are several, one at UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, Wake Forrest and a few others. In Ga, I believe UGA offers this program as well as Emory University.
