Lymphedema Physical Therapy

Marcia Said:

Could lymphedema be a possibility after the removal of one lymph node?

We Answered:

I don't think it's common but also i don't think it's impossible.
My mother has lymphodema from her breast cancer operation and she does "water therapy" . She runs the shower over the affected area and it soothes the pain for a while.

Janice Said:

will MRI show if i have some kind of nerve damage?

We Answered:

Yes MRI showes everything. Have you checked with Physiotherapist? If you have a coverage; I encourage you to do check with a physiotherapist.. A Physiotherapist will put you in exercises program and therapy that would alleviate your pain. Other thant that, you can increase your intake of magnesium calcium & Omega 3. There is also an excellent anti inflammatory supplement that you can locate in health food stores. The name is " Gulucsomine". I hope you feel better soon.

Oh I just read that you checked in with a therapist.
Did you try the supplements that I have mentioned above?
Do you sit a lot? Maybe adjusting what you do through out your day could help too.
Such as watching your posture when you sit and bend etc. ANd if you sit a lot; to get up from your chair every half hour and walk around to promote an increase of blood flow,.
I don't know want to suggest ,...Other than; advising you that, if you can you might want to try Pilate's... as it a very good method to alleviate pain; to east nerve and muscles tension.

It is better to start with certified Pilates instructor as the movements can be tricky..

I have a disease called Lymphedema and it doesnt let me wear what I want. How can I start my own fashion line.

We Answered:

Good for you to take control of a learn how to manage your condition as well as recognize the need for women (and men) for clothing! Once you've got some designs, I would contact vendors who sell medical support wear (compression stockings). I'd also see if you can get a link on the lymphedema network website. I'd also suggest a shoe design that accomodates the multilayer bandaging (besides a sugical shoe).

Unemployment benefits question... Why is it taking so long?

We Answered:

It sounds like your case it being reviewed because the company you worked for may have contested the claim. Usually, you don't get unemployment benefits if you quit a job, unless the reason was job related (for example, if the company moved too far away to commute). Hopefully, this will resolve in your favor, but the company you worked for is not responsible for you quitting, or your personal circumstances (terrible though they are and I feel so badly for you) and if they contest the claim, they will likely win, and you would have to make an appeal, so this could take a while.

any one here or know someone who has lymphedema?????

We Answered:

Hi There, Happy New Year to you too. I'm Tina and I'm owner of Lymphland Support Group Online through yahoo groups, my website is http://www.lymphland.com and you can join the yahoo group through my site. We have over 200 members with all kinds of lymphedema problems ranging from genital to arm to leg, to primary (born with it) to abdominal. We have lots of information and we have monthly chats and a chatroom that is open at any time with times posted when moderators will be in the room too if you need to talk or need information.

You mentioned physical therapy, was that Manual Lymph Drainage therapy? And which method, Vodder, Foeldi or Chikly? Different types of therapy work differently on people, I do well with Chikly whereas not so well with Vodder. The surgeries probably did impact your lymphatic system and are the root of your swelling, did you talk to the doctor about that? The pain is bad yes, but you don't want surgery, that's called debulking where they try to reroute lymph passages and it's not reliable and outright dangerous due to the possibility of infection.

You're more than welcome to visit and/or join our group, http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/lym…

Marlene Said:

Do you personally know someone with lymphedema?

We Answered:

my dad had lymphedema in his legs. We were told it means that his circulatory system was not carrying fluid out of the area.

He used the massage machine 30 min twice a day and YES it worked. He could not wear the stockings on his legs like your mom does on her arms so the air massage and water pills is all he did to treat it. His legs looked a whole lot better once he started with the machine.

The only thing you have to be careful with is if it gets turned to high it can squeeze hard enough to damage the skin. Also be careful not to have wrinkles as this is where pressure can build and cause pain. The other thing is he had to make sure he went to the bathroom before or he would have to stop and go. (this makes since that the water has to go somewhere)

I actually put his on one day and it felt good (he could do both legs at one time)

I hope this works for your mom.
