Neck Physical Therapy

Judy Said:

What do they do at physical therapy for a neck sprain?

We Answered:

The first thing we will probably address is posture...it is THEE most important thing when addressing neck pain. Then, based on your evaluation, it may require teaching you some exercises to increase your motion if it is restricted, or to increase your strength if you have weakness, etc.

Based on the type of injury you had, there may also be some modalities such as ultrasound (a deep heat), electrical stimulation (this sounds scarrier than it is...it feels really good actually), or massage if you are having spasms.

It all depends on what the therapist finds on the first day. The first day is a chance to complete an evaluation and establish a baseline of your deficits...it's a day to "check things out."

Good luck

Maxine Said:

Physical Therapy after neck surgery?

We Answered:

The massage will ease the pain for the short term. What she needs is to strengthen the muscles in her neck and shoulders so that they can support her head. This usually takes about 6 weeks to start having an effect. Make sure she follows her home exercise program closely, otherwise she will not recover. It's her neck, it's her responsibility.
