What is more effective for children with autism: Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy? We Answered:
The vast majority of kids with autism do not need or qualify for Physical Therapy services. In my experience, the majority of kids with autism do qualify for Occupational Therapy services. So if your goal is to work with a lot of children on the autism spectrum, OT is a much better bet than PT.Dwayne Said:
What is a better career in everyone's opinion Occupational therapy or physical therapy? We Answered:
Both are very similar in terms of salary, opportunity, schedules and stress factors. Both can also require a signficant amount of stamina...especially if you work in the hospital setting. Unless you plan on becoming a hand therapist (traditionally an OT), plan on being on your feet most of the day, having to get up and down off the floor, get into close contact with people and potentially lift people. PT may be physical if teaching someone how to stand...yet, an OT who is teaching someone how to transfer to the toilet will experience the same thing. Back injuries are a risk to both professions, but both professions are experts in ergonomics...therefore, we learn how to avoid injury....I will say that one advantage you would have is that if you became a PT and you did hurt your back, you would most likely know what to do to fix it (yet, look at me, I had to go through wrist surgery and had to see an OT....)
If you plan on working in pediatricts, PT's will focus on helping children reach their motor milestones...rolling, crawling, walking, etc. In OT, you may focus on children who have sensory integration disorders and children with fine motor coordination problems...so take your pick as to which one interests you more.
Either way, it may be beneficial to do some observing in the clinic before picking a major...all PT programs require this anyway. See if you can observe both PT and OT so you can get an idea of what you like.

Would you rather be in Occupational therapy or Physical therapy? We Answered:
Both of which are in high demand. I had a similar dilemma at one point and I decided on OT. I don't want to convince you into this field just because I've decided on it though, I don't who you are and what you're are interested in. the biggest thing I can suggest is go and shadow some professionals. Call a local hospital or nursing home and ask if you can observe an OT and PT. Once you see them at work it should make it easier to decide. Maybe also take a look at the schooling necessary for each career that may make the choice easier. Good Luck!Joan Said:
Which is the right job for me: occupational therapy or physical therapy? We Answered:
I am a PT and very creative in my treatments. In general, OT may do more arts and crafts as part of their treatment but PT see a wider range of patients. My friend works in a nursing home. She takes patients walking outside and filling bird feeders. She dances to Frank Sinatra to get people moving. She rigged up a door bell to see if patients were putting to much weight on their injured foot. My suggestion is to shadow some PT and OTs at different specialties and see what you like before picking one. Best wishes
