Physical Therapist Training

Darrell Said:

Is Athletic Training a good undergraduate degree for someone who wants to be a Physical Therapist?

We Answered:

One of my close friends is majoring in Athletic Training. There's lots of options from there and if you're not completely sure about the Physical Therapy but are sure about Athletic Training, then I highly suggest going for it.

Jimmie Said:

I was wondering if majoring in athletic training is okay to be a physical therapist?

We Answered:

You will probably need to take a few extra classes that you will not get as an ATC student, but otherwise, yes, this is fine!

Becoming a Physical therapist with a degree in Athletic Training?

We Answered:

Some of courses you take for the ATC may overlap with some of the prerequisite courses for the PT program. These careers usually compliment each other well, as PT can be viewed as an extension and progression from ATC.

What I suggest you do is to starting looking at what schools you may wish to attend for PT school. Get an idea of what classes your particular program requires for the prerequisite courses. Start taking those that will fullfill both your major and PT requirements and then begin taking the remaining prereqs as you find time in your schedule. Start planning now...especially if your ATC and PT program do not overlap.

Good luck. Go to the APTA website for a list of accredited PT schools: www.apta.org

Alexander Said:

Can I find a physical therapist job that has on the job training?

We Answered:

Individuals pursuing a career as a physical therapist usually need a master’s degree from an accredited physical therapy program and a state license.

Most physical therapist aides are trained on the job, but most physical therapist assistants earn an associate degree from an accredited physical therapist assistant program. Some states require licensing for physical therapist assistants.

Most entry-level recreational therapists need a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, or in recreation with a concentration in therapeutic recreation. People may qualify for paraprofessional positions with an associate degree in therapeutic recreation or another subject related to health care. An associate degree in recreational therapy; training in art, drama, or music therapy; or qualifying work experience may be sufficient for activity director positions in nursing homes.

Individuals pursuing a career as an occupational therapist usually need to earn a post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university or education deemed equivalent.
