Physical Therapy After Knee Surgery

Jackie Said:

Physical Therapy (knee), what's it like?

We Answered:

I personally don't know how it feels to be a physical therapy patient. However, I do work at a physical therapy office and see hundreds of knee patients every week. Therapy is not intended to cause you pain. You are expected to complete exercises that will gradually increase the range of motion in your knee. Often times these exercises may hurt because, in your case, you will be bending your knee further than it's current range of motion. Physical therapy should not require any extra medication aside from what you are already taking due to your surgery. At the end of your therapy session you will probably get a cold compress applied to your knee which will help with pain and soreness. In some cases, electrical stimulation will be used to reduce pain. The best thing I can tell you is, no pain...no gain! It's true! You will be surprised at how far you come in a matter of weeks. Good luck!

Kirk Said:

What kind of things would you do in physical therapy day after knee surgery?

We Answered:

You will likely only be on range of motion and pain control modalities for the first week or so after surgery. Maybe doing some isometric quad sets and/or some hip active motion with the brace on (straight leg raises, side leg lifts, etc). Every surgeon is a little different in what they prefer patients to do after surgery. I can't imagine you'd be without a brace.

...I know you've been dealing with this for a long time. Best wishes.

No physical therapy after knee surgery?

We Answered:

you need to relax! Listen to the PA and do what they say, because they are the one treating you and they are the one that closely works with your surgeon.

How long does the knee remain stiff after arthroscopic surgery?

We Answered:

It takes about 2-3 weeks with doing your PT and exercises to get back to mobility. Also if you stop moving it for a long period of time it will begin to be stiff again. It takes about a month for you to pretty much fully recovery. It is totally normal to have stiffness after surgery. You will return to 100% mobility as long as you are good about doing your excerises and PT.

Darryl Said:

Normal activity after knee surgery?

We Answered:

It's frustrating for everyone. At two months, it's still normal to be experiencing significant pain and fatigue. Three months seems to be the magic turn around time in terms of resuming normal household activities of daily living and better pain control...yet full recovery will take a year. You are right, she should be off the walker by now...she may have spent a little too much time in home health...I like to see them in the outpatient setting by the 4th week. So, yes, she does seem to be coming a little slow, but do realize that signficant pain and sleeplessness are still prevalent at this point. Good luck!
