Physical Therapy After Stroke

Adam Said:

Does the spirit survive death and is there consciousness of an afterlife after death?

We Answered:

Your brother had a near death experience. It's actually much more common than people think, but most people who experienced this never tell anyone, by fear of being judged or considered insane.

Last year, a friend of my mom's "died" temporarily on the operating table and she had a similar experience during which she met her dad. Then she came back in pain. When she woke up, she was screaming « No, dad, I don't want to go back » (to Earth) « I don't want to go back ». When she said that, the nurses knew right away that she had had a near death experience and they called a psychiatrist from the same hospital to interview her and write an official report of her experience for the hospital files.

Friend had a stroke...very depressed...anyone have any ideas to help her?

We Answered:

I am curious what caused the stroke. I have brain stem based TIAs caused by APS. It frustration as heck not to be able to get words out or find them.

Well, I think she needs to get into PT and OT. She may not be able to talk again with her voice but she may get some sort of communication board or computer voice thing going so she is able to communicate. The computer may be a way to communicate for now. Open a word document and let her type what she wants to say. Reading a book, doing a crossword puzzle or word find. Things that exercise the brain.

I would also talk to her mom about pushing to get back on the antidepressants. Strokes can cause depression from a chemical imbalance and then sitting around and not being able to do anything is just adding to the depression.

Maybe to range of motion exercises with her. Recognize small progresses.

Thank you for being a good friend to her. Please talk to her mom about therapy and antidepressants. Maybe a home CNA needs to come in to work with her?

Symptoms after a stroke, Left side paralyzed, but better now except my left arm feels as if it is overworked,?

We Answered:

Dan P, remember the old saying "if you don't use it you loose it" same here, remember the exercises your physical therapist was doing with you and keep at them, same goes for your leg, exercise them as much as possible and if they hurt just remember that you can feel that pain and that is good, I had the same with a metal hip was put into me and it made one leg shorter than the other, but am getting there now

keep your chin up and keep doing those exercises, no-one will be bothered if you take a long time doing things or you make mistakes, just take your time and be yourself, to heck with what other people think, they don't know you or your problems or more importantly your achievements

cheers

Stiff contracted ankles and hand after stroke....any insight?

We Answered:

If she has dense spastisity it may be difficult to address. However, some improvement may be noted with serial casting, static progressive splinting (such as a JAS splint), etc. However, it sounds like her contracture are too progressed for these to work.

Without knowing more about her condition (ie, is she having spasticity or is it simply due to immobility...and if she is not paralyzed, I would suspect spasticity) it's difficult for me to say with any certainty.

If spasticity is an issue, Botox, Baclofen or other antispasmotics may be recommended. A neurologist or a physiatrist may by able to better advise you on this.

Otherwise, surgical release may be required.
