Physical Therapy Assistant Courses

Jill Said:

Is there an on-line college where you can take courses to become a Physical Therapy Assistant?

We Answered:

No, CAPTE, the agency which accredits all PT and PTA programs in the US does not recognize any on-line programs for these professions.

There are, however, online courses for physical therapy aides...but you can read some of my posts about that. The aide/tech position is an on-the job trained worker in a physical therapy clinic that may help the therapists directly, clean the gym, answer phones, etc, but this is not a licensed profession.

Lena Said:

will the nasm cert. help me with the physical therapy/assistat degree?

We Answered:

Yes and No.

It might slightly good on an application to the physical therapy program, and you will get a good background in personal training.

However, personal training is based on a the well-adult fitness paradigm. Therefore, the skills you learn for NASM will really only come into play as your clients are approaching the END of their rehabilitation.

Physical therapy is built on the disease model process of rehabilitation...once they are ready to integrate back to a community level fitness program appropriate for the skills you learned in NASM, they are most likely ready to be discharged from PT.

Shawn Said:

How many years of education (disregarding high school) Does it take to become a Physical Therapist?

We Answered:

In short...a PT degree takes 6-7 years of college. If you become a PTA first, add two years onto that for a total of 8-9...as Mary said, becoming a PTA first doesn't progress you towards a PT degree.
