Physical Therapy Back Pain

Shane Said:

car wreck + back pain = physical therapy?

We Answered:

If you feel like you are getting better on your own, it's often best to let nature take it's course. Our body has a natural, inherent system to repair itself, if we give it the right stimulation. Trying to resume your normal daily activities is a start. You should expect some pain with trying new things, but as long as it doesn't progressively worsen, it is safe to continue. Movement is needed for recovery and repair, but must be done in moderation.

If, however, you feel your progress is plateauing, or you actually start to worsen as you resume your activites, then yes, you should definetely seek out some physical therapy.

I have constant back pain, in physical therapy nothing is working does anyone know what I can do?

You have ruptured the disc at the bottom of your spine (L5/S1) and now your spine is hitting bone on bone. Your disc at L3/L4 is bulging out between the vertebrae and causing possible pinched nerves there and is deteriorating (degenerative disc). Your L4 has a an old break or deformed bone in one place. With this type of report I cannot believe that your Dr has not referred you to a neurologist or orthopedic surgeon by this time. You are going to need surgery on that spine to take the pressure off of the nerves, to put "spacers" in between the vertebrae so they are not rubbing together and causing excruciating pain, and to put everything in there straight and back to where it should be. You also need a better pain management than steroid shots and mild pain medication. When you have this type of thing going on in your spine you are only making it worse by doing physical therapy since your bones are rubbing on each other. At the very least you need to ask your Dr for a referral to a pain management clinic so that you can get some serious pain management medications. If you don't need a referral for one, find a pain management clinic in your network and get into there FAST! You may have to opt for the pain management therapy for awhile before you go through with the spinal fusion since your baby is so young. This surgery is very invasive and there is no way you will be able to care for your child after having it done and won't be able to for about 3 months after. It does fix the spine though and could well be worth it once your baby is a little older. So, shame on your Dr for keeping you in pain this long, ask him ASAP for that referral so that you can at least get some pain control started. I do understand what you are going through and know how horrible you feel. I hope you get that referral and some relief soon!
