There are not supposed to be too many jobs for the medical assistant (or medical coder or biller) despite what private $$ schools claim :) If interested in any of those fields, please go with the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course) provided that they are accredited within the industry as they are usually more affordable.

I would suggest you work for a centralized billing/coding company. Instead of just learning one specialty, you will get an opportunity to code for a wide variety of specialties and make yourself more marketable.

I started out in one of these companies and right away learned 4 specialties, which gave me an edge over other coders who only knew 1 or 2 and it helped me get my current job at the VA (great place to work, if you have one in ND, you should try getting a coding job there) I now code for 10+ specialties and will soon learn surgery and inpatient, which will help further my career.

If you don't like blood, you probably wouldn't be a good medical assistant.
Coding is a great career if you have the proper education with certifications to be a RHIT or even CCS.
P.S. - typing speed has little to do with coding; that's transcription that requires excellent typing. :)
