Physical Therapy Certification

Judith Said:

What is the best path to take in earning certification or degree in Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

Start by observing in a clinic...make sure it's what you want to do. Get your observation documented as they will probably need to serve as a reference later on.

Then, look at some schools you are intersted in. Go the the APTA website at www.apta.org to get the list of accredited schools so you can see what their prerequisite requirements are. Based on that, choose a degree path that will encompass the prerequisite courses for the program you wish to apply to. Biology is usually a safe bet. Focus on a high GPA for your prerequisite courses. Depending on the structure of the program, you may or may not need to complete your BS prior to admission to the program.

Future career in physical therapy - HELP!?

We Answered:

Congratulations on graduating! And you've made a great choice for graduate work. I worked for many years as a nurse, the last 15 years or so as the administrator for a home care agency. Physical thereapists are really valuable members of the health care team.

In my opinion your best bet will be the clinic. As you mentioned, the hospitals now require a certification just to assist. And even though it's a different setting, I think you'll get a good idea of the job in a slower paced atmosphere. You'll have better access to the therapists and can pick their brains a little. If you worked in a hospital, even if it was back when there wasn't a requirement for certification, you'd just have a list of people to see every day to exercise. No PT along side you.

Another benefit is that during breaks at school the clinic may have paid spots that you can fill after you begin graduate school.

Best of luck to you.

Teresa Said:

I have a BS in exercise physiology, can it be applied to physical therapy assistant certification?

We Answered:

No, to become a PT or PTA requires graduation from an accredited program. Wisconsin is also a state that requires PTAs to be licensed.

However, you are probably more than qualified to enter a PTA program which should only take you two years to complete.

Jaime Said:

Should I become a Physical Therapy Assistant or should I be a Junior High Teacher?

We Answered:

I am a PT who supervises PTAs and we work in a school district and follow the school calender. We are treated just like faculty. We treat kids with disabilities but interact with the whole school. I work with kids from K to 12.

Search for schools near you. USC has a physical therapy program. Additionally, some online colleges offer physical therapy degrees.
