Physical Therapy Degree Programs

Vickie Said:

Do I have to be enrolled in the physical therapy degree program to work as a physical therapy assistant?

We Answered:

In order to be a PTA, you must be a graduate of an accredited 2 year PT program. You can be an aide while in school but not an assistant

Annie Said:

Does Marshall University have degree programs in Physical Therapy? Will I be able to get a Masters degree.?

We Answered:

No. It appears that they have a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, but that is about as close as they get to physical therapy. And no masters' degrees in that area.

Dolores Said:

How rigorous is a Physical Therapy degree program? What are some courses you have to take?

We Answered:

The prerequisite courses vary from school to school, but generally involves 1-2 years of bio, a year of both physics and chem, 1-3 semesters of psych, statistics, trig and/or calc. Once completed (and you may need to complete your bachelor's degree before applying for admission) you can apply for a spot in the program.

Most programs are competitive entry...meaning just because you meet the qualifications does not guarantee acceptance. For instance, where i went to school, minimum GPA was 3.0...however, the average GPA of those admitted is 3.6. Historically, PT programs only accept 10-20% of qualified applicants. However, application rates have been down in the past few years...theoretically making it easier to get it.

Once in the program, your first year will typically consist of gross human anatomy, physiology, pathology, as well as several PT specific courses...ie where you learn some examination procedures, etc. The course work typically takes 3 years in grad school with heavy emphasis on the sciences (such as neurology) and practicle classes (spine, etc.).

It is a great career and currently rated as #2 in job satisfaction.

Lloyd Said:

What is more valuable, a bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy or a Masters Degree in the same subject?

We Answered:

physical therapy is a graduate degree. It is 3 years past any bs degree. It is a clinical doctorate. You will need to complete the pre reqs you do not have probably gen bio and A and P. I am assuming you took gen physics, gen chem, math, stats and psy. PT is a great field with lots of jobs. www.apta.org

Brandy Said:

Different ways to get a physical therapy degree?

We Answered:

There are 2 types of PT programs. One is get a BS in anything with the appropriate pre reqs then apply to the PT program. If accepted go for 3 years and get your DPT. Most common option.

The second type is the 3 plus 3 option. You start at the school as a freshman. The curriculm has the proper prereqs. If you maintain the required GPA, you start in the professional phase of the program in your 4th year. So it is a 6 years vs the 7 years. These programs are housed mostly at small private colleges. Even though you are saving a year, your long term cost may be more than going to a state school.
