Physical Therapy Dogs

Eddie Said:

Does anyone know how you go about getting a therapy dog?

We Answered:

I think you mean a service dog. A therapy dog is one that goes to hospitals, nursing homes etc to cheer people up. A service dog is a dog that has been individually trained in work or tasks to aid its disabled handler.
There are quite a few programs that will train a dog for someone with physical disabilities, some of them are even free or low cost (others can be up to $20,000.)
A dog can be trained by the owner, however this is best recommended for someone with experience and/or a good private trainer on the side.
Here's a list that might help you get started on your search.

Some places will place a dog no matter what state the person is in, others only in their area.
Good luck.

Edit:
To the poster below me, you must be on the west coast..this side it's Paws With a Cause that you hear daily ;) However I believe both of those places do place dogs nationally (I know for a fact PWAC has even placed in Hawaii.)
The hard part is meeting their criteria. I'm not their cookie cutter disability profile, so I went the OT route.

Occupational / Physical therapists: Do you like your job?

We Answered:

I love being a physical therapist. I know therapists who bring their therapy dog to work in both pediatrics and in geriatrics.

You do not need to decide yet but will need to start taking your pre reqs. you also need shadow hours. Go to places where you can do both at the same time. Then you will have a clearer idea of which you want.

Good luck
