Physical Therapy Education Requirements

Kathryn Said:

will a B.S in Kinesiology allow you to become a physical therapist?

We Answered:

PT is a graduate degree. Kinesiology makes a great BS for people entering a graduate program for PT.

Maxine Said:

Going into physical therapy without a formal education in physics?

We Answered:

Forget understanding the concepts, you will be ineligible to apply to a PT program in the US, as a year of physics is required.

Granted, it's been a long time since I've had physics, but I think the second semester is where they covered torque, force, speed, etc.

....makes it a little difficult to understand PT in general without taking this course.

Joel Said:

Is a DPT really needed to perform Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

The purpose of it is to make the PT a better practicioner to accept direct access. This includes the ability to screen for underlying medical problems that require referral to a physician and to have a better understanding of the the entire medical process such as effects of medication and understanding radiological tests.

If one is practicing in a state where there is no direct access, it's probably not really necessary, but the trend is towards making physical therapy a direct access provider (ie, going to the PT without first having to obtain a referral from your physician) in all states.

If you consider the basic education a PT needs...bio, chem, physics, math and psych as well as general education credits...this rarely can be completed in any less than 3 years...consider it takes 3 years to have a good solid basis in the core PT courses, now you are already at at least a 6 year master's degree. Really, though, the undergraduate education takes usually four years, so now you are already at 7 years of education. So the DPT falls somewhere between a master's degree and a PhD...

Having graduated originally from a BS program where everything was "crammed" into two years pre-professional and two years professional, the DPT is much better. Having gone back and finished the DPT, I understand where the MPT and BS programs were a little too superficial.

Mark Said:

Could I major in Education and minor in Biology and have the requirements for a Bachelor's degree in Biology?

We Answered:

If all you're looking for is the prerequisites, you don't need to major in bio. Just sign up for the classes and make sure you don't graduate with that education degree before you take all the prereq classes you need.

Lots of kids go on to med schools, dental schools, etc majoring in things other than the hard sciences. They just take the science classes they need in addition to the classes they need for their major.

You might not even need to minor in bio. The only reason to might be to make it easier to get into those science classes.
