Physical Therapy Employment

Ryan Said:

What is wrongful employment termination? Is it legal? How is it seen as such?

We Answered:

If your employer stipulated that you were not allowed to have unauthorized passengers in the company car , i.e. your children, that is most likely the cause for your termination. Check your employment contract carefully. If you feel you were wrongfully terminated, let your employer know. I wouldn't advise a lawsuit unless you have the funds to sustain it, as it could drag on for years. Unfortunately, I have known of several employers who have let employees go for no better reason than fear of making the group health policy cost more.

Career Advice::Doctor of Chiropractic Care or Doctors of Physical Therapy only please!?!?

We Answered:

If you hope to become a PT, you should examine the requirements for entrance into the specific graduate level program to which to hope to apply. It usually requires several courses that includes chemistry, physics, biology, math, and psychology. Declare a major as an undergraduate (preferrably one that encompasses most of those courses). Begin taking your gen eds, major and prerequisite courses. As you neer completion of your BS, look for a volunteer or employment opportunity in a physical therapy clinic...preferrably one where someone would be willing to write you a letter of recommendation. Strive for a high GPA as admission is selective.

Good luck

I am currently torn between careers in Massage therapy or Physical Therapy Assistant...any thoughts?

We Answered:

I think you said the key phrase...finding steady employment. A PTA is much more likely to find a stable environment for employment. The massage therapy field can be somewhat competitive for a client base. Even if you establish yourself as self employed and might make a good salary, think about the benefits your are loosing: 401k, disability, workman's comp, and MEDICAL insurance. A private policy could cost you about $900 a month and be loaded with exemptions. ...and forget about trying to insure an entire family.

However, what do you LIKE to do? If you really like to do just massage, you would be somewhat disappointed in becoming a PTA. In the field of PT, we certainly use massage, but on a very, very limited basis. You are much more likely to work on someone's flexibility, ability to walk, balance, etc as a PTA.

So look in your hear as to what you'd actually like to do.

Physical Therapy vs. Occupation Therapy ?

We Answered:

It really depends on your personality. There is a lot of overlap. You need volunteer hours for both programs so volunteer and see what you like.

I am a PT. I love what I do but I respect what the OTs do. We work together every day. In my opion, there is more prestige in PT and more jobs. PT tend to make more money. But the OT that run there own sensory clinics make just as much as the outpatient PT clinics. As for research, OTs do just as much as PT

Best wishes

How do you find work after a long gap in employment?

We Answered:

Without knowing your skills and previous experience it is a little difficult to offer concise advise but I will try to help. If you previously worked as a blue collar worker, it may be very difficult to find a similar job if you have had a back injury or something else that may affect your work. Discrimination may be illegal, but during my time working in HR I saw people rejected because of previous injuries they were required to report. You must be honest on an application but be prepared for people who are not. The suggestions concerning job training are good. You will be out of the house while learning something new, maybe even something you have always wanted to do but did not think about before now. As far as recent experience being required, try a temp service for a while. If you are prompt and get good reports from employers, they will continue to use you and you may even fall into a permanent position. It is also a good way to learn new skills because it can be difficult for a temp service to always provide exactly what was requested. If you find that searching on your own is not working, definitely allow others to step in and help. I wish you luck in your search and I hope that the job of your dreams comes your way. Who knows, maybe you are an undiscovered motivational speaker and this will show you your path. :P

Is company still required to fullfil workmans comp after I leave the company?

We Answered:

Your employer isnt the one paying. It is your state's insurance company that is paying. So yes, if you change jobs you will still continue to get whatever the settlement was. You will continue to receive benefits until the settlement is fulfilled.

Discuss It!
