Dan Said:

Best degree for getting into physical therapy program?

We Answered:

Just make sure that you fulfill all the courses required by the program to which you hope to apply.

Athletic training is a fine major. However, you might need to take a couple extra classes. Where I went to school, PTs had to take an extra semester of bio and physics as compared to the ATCs as well as more psych courses.

As mentioned above, the actual degree you have will not be the deciding factor. It will be your GPA, your GRE scores, your letters of recommendation, your activities and, if applicable, your writing sample and/or your interview.

Many, many ATCs go on to PT school.

Best wishes

How do I become a physical therapist?

We Answered:

Here are a list of schools that offer physical therapy: http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?sect…

Physical therapy is a graduate degree. The vast majority of schools only offer DPT degrees now (Doctor of Physical Therapy) which is a 3 year program, and very difficult and demanding. It looks like the 3 California state schools are still offering MPT degrees. However, the standard in the field is the DPT degree.

For your undergrad degree, most PT's major in Kinesiology (study of human movement). You can also major in applied health, exercise physiology, physiology, and many universities offer a "pre-physical therapy" curriculum.

It will take at least 7 years or so to get your DPT degree. Most people take 4-5 years to earn their Bachelor's degree, and then the 3 years in physical therapy school. You then have to sit for a state exam to become a licensed physical therapist.

Good luck!
