Bachelors, Masters Degree or Doctorate in Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

You can no longer get a BS in PT. That was phased out several years ago. You now must get a graduate degree in PT. Of approximately 200 accredited PT schools, only 10 or so still offer a Masters degree. They must convert by the year 2020 to the DPT. In my opinion, this will happen within the next few years. Even with the DPT, you will start at the beginning. You will have a ton of reponsibility, that comes with being a PT. You will see patients and supervises those under you such as assistants, aides, and support staff. With the transition to the DPT, most universities want faculty to have PhDs along with their PT credentials. As a PT, you can act as clinical instructors and guest lecturers in your area of expertise. Becoming a medical professional requires, life long learning. You will need to earn continuing education credits. Most people take them in an area of interest and speciality.

Physical Therapy major or Nursing?

We Answered:

Both PT and OT are graduate degrees. Do you undergraduate at UCLA and then transfer to grad school where you are ready. It's a very common thing to do (to do your undergraduate work somewhere other than the place where you attend grad school)

Beverly Said:

which career is better - Physical therapy or Pharmacy?

We Answered:

The PharmD program is not neccessarily any harder or easier than the MS PT or DPT, the difficulty would depend on your individual abilities. Pharmacy whould have more chemistries, PT would have more physics.

A cursory look at any small town, or major city in the US would show you that there are obviously more pharmacies in the US than physical therapy clinics. Given that, there will be more job openings for pharmacists.

The pharmacist usually has 2 or 3 patients on hold on the phone, while talking to a physician or nurse on another line, and has another patient waiting to be counseled at the pharmacy window. All the while, the pharm techs are stacking up filled prescriptions to be checked before being released. It is an extremely busy pace most of the day for most pharmacist. Of course if they are at a retail pharmacy like Walmart or Walgreens, there is often someone asking about the price of the special t-shirts sitting in front of the pharmacy.

A physical therapist can also have a very busy day. Generally they are supervising 2 or three PT assistants while working with a patient. They also recieve the calls from the doctors and nurses, but usually don't have as many from patients as they see their patients 2 or three times a week. Physical therapist work with their hands and use physical treatments (as the name implies), whereas a pharmacist is a more purely mentally tasking occupation.

It really comes down to what type activity you enjoy, what mental tasks, and what level of patient contact.

Both are very good professions.

Which major brings you more job opportunities - biotechnology or physical therapy?

We Answered:

Anything technology related usually has more opportunities. However, the question is which do you like the best, or would you rather be doing something else?

Make sure you choose a degree in something that interests you, as that is what you will be best at.

I had a friend who majored in information technology because she thought that would get her the best salary. After getting her doctorate, she finally landed an IT job and hated it! After 3 weeks she left and had no idea what she would do next.
