Physical Therapy Interview!?

We Answered:

You can not ask people to email you if you do not allow emails. I would suggest that you ready past answers. Also go to the national PT website www.apta.org

Some answers to you questions.

training: Currently PT is a graduate degree. PT is moving toward the DPT as the entry level degree. Prior to the mid 90 most people got a BS in PT, then it progressed to a Masters and now a DPT. There are only a handful of MS PT programs. They are all in the process of going to the DPT. One of the challenges is that with the change to the DPT, there are less people interested in PT because you can make more money with other degrees with the same or less education. Also reimbursement has not gone up with the degree requirements. If anything, do to the economy and health insurance, reimbursement has gone down. Also co pays have gone up.

Another big changes is that every thing is evidenced based and PT are taught differential diagnosis. Many states have gone on to direct access. Patients can see PTs without a script or referral.

Adam Said:

Do Doctors of Physical Therapy have trouble paying off their school debt?

We Answered:

That is the big issue in PT right know as the salaries have not increased as much as the cost of the degree. However, there is a need for PT so the salaries are beginning to go up. There are many employers that are offering sign on bonus, tuition reimbursement to help in recruiting staff. If you go to Baylor--they pay you 40K to go to school and free tuition with a required military time after. For some people that works. There are scholarships but not as much as you think. You can work but it is limited to evenings and weekends. When clinical are going on it is more difficult to work. Most new grads work a primary job and then some home care (40-600 per visit) or nursing home (40+hour). The key is to go into PT school with the least amount of debt.
