Physical Therapy Month

Mae Said:

physical therapy for my 17 month old?

We Answered:

My cousin's legs were bowed - her bones were crooked - they tried to 'fix' it as an infant with casts and braces. Eventually they kinda gave up, and sad they would do more later (I think) point being - now she's 19 or so, and fine -- she may be a tiny bit pigeon toed, but has no issues or anything from it - you wouldn't notice except I know she had an issue.
It's great that they are interviening early with your boy - hopefully everything will get fixed up before he can even remember.
I'd assume they will massage his leg / foot and have him play little games to exercise the leg into the right position -- may even give him a brace or something too (I went to PT for an injury to my wrist - it was all game type things, massages, heat therapy, things like that - and I'm sure that it is geared to his age) Just make sure to schedule the therapy when he is well rested and in a great mood - if it's nap time it is going to be awful!!

Physical Therapy for a nine month old?

We Answered:

I don't think you will need to take time off of work. Here is a link to a site that has great tips and advice on therapy for babies. Check it out, I think it will help and you could try it then if nothing improves in a few months, try a PT. Good luck to you and baby though, I hope everything works out for the best! :-)

After 10 years of joint problems can one month of physical therapy "cure" me?

We Answered:

The benefit of physical therapy at this point will be to first improve your mobility (soft tissue and joint) to allow your body to achieve proper alignment. Next, you can learn how to strengthen and utilize the core muscles to keep your body in it's most efficient position.

How much does Physical Therapy pay a month?

We Answered:

A new grad today could expect to make $35-$40/ hour. Your actual rate will depend on your practice setting (outpatient clinic, nursing home, home health, or hospital) and your location (rural vs city). Per diem employees (no guaranteed hours- you're on call- and no benefits) make more. But guessing what the pay will be when you graduate from therapy school in 7-8 years (all programs will be doctorate degrees by 2010) is a bit more tricky. Yes, there will always be a demand for therapists, but if Medicare tightens payments again, as it did with the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, salaries go down as payments go down. I graduated in 1999 and was lucky to get my first job as a PT for $18/hr. Do not get into Physical Therapy for the money- do it because you love it!

Is Physical Therapy for 10 Months Too Long?

We Answered:

It's definetely more than the average person, but considering you've had multiple procedures, it's certainly not unheard of. What you should question is: does your therapy erquire the skill of a practicioner at this point, or are you ready for a home/gym based program. Are you continuing to make progress. If these things are not being met, then you should discuss discharge with your MD and PT.

Im thinking of choosing physical therapy as a career. I am joining the navy next month. is this a good career?

We Answered:

Well a give you a grand salute that you are joining the Navy! As far as PT, one needs at least a master's degree (doctorate degrees in PT are not necessarily required unless wanting to teach at the university level or perform research) which includes clinical, hands-on experience as a student PT. It's supposed to be extremely competitive to get accepted into PT school with only a limited number of seats and many prospective students having a 4.0 gpa/grade point average. Prerequisites for PT school include physics, chemistry, biology and anatomy & physiology (though Not 'human anatomy' as that usually doesn't transfer). Each program may have slightly different prereq's and requirements so please check with that school.

There are associate's (2 yr) degree programs for physical therapist Assistant as well but with much less resposibility on the job such as not doing patient evaluations and a lower salary. For general info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and search 'physical therapists', 'physical therapist assistants' or such.

US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

Please steer clear of online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, stratford career, university of phoenix, strayer, devry, kaplan and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.uopsucks.com

What is the physical therapy for floppy 4-month baby with hypotonia?

We Answered:

It's been a long time since I've had an internship in the pediatric setting, but I remember focusing on trying to induce "righting reactions" in a baby...the normal reactions that are age appropriate for a 4 month old in response to position changes. The therapist will most likely use different movements and positions that will instinctually provoke the baby to want to move from that position in order to overcome hypotonia.

...but it's been a long time since I've done this...I'd suggest you try to find "Mary"...she's another PT on this board who works in pediatrics.

Discuss It!
