Physical Therapy Pay Scale

Sharon Said:

physical therapy assistant verses occupational therapy assistant?

We Answered:

Believe me, you WILL be able to find a job after completing either of these programs. You may want to job shadow both and see which best suits you. both pay about the same and the job openings seem about the same too.

Rachel Said:

how much do physical therapist with a doctorates earn?

We Answered:

It really doesn't change. The average salary for someone with a DPT is the same as someone with an entry level MS. The way most facilities hire, there is no separate job class for someone with the DPT. Rather, your salary will increase with experience and any specialty certifications you hold. If you hold a board certified specialty or have extensive continuing education in a particular area of PT that is in need, this will be more likely to influence your salary. These are things you typically persue after you've had at least a couple years experience.

I want to major in psychology. What are the possibilities in my future?

We Answered:

to your next to last question - that would be a psychiatrist and will require college then medical school, internship, and residencies. good luck.
most doctors (MD or PhD) do not make tons of money anymore thanks to health management organizations and greedy insurance companies.
and paying back school loans (unless you are already independently wealthy) will take most of your first several years' salary.

I want to major in psychology. What are the possibilities in my future?

We Answered:

A psychiatrist is a psychologist/counselor who prescribes medication. Higher paying but longer schooling. I don't think there is a lot of growth in the field of psychology; if you were going to be a psychiatrist, that's about it. You don't get promoted really, unless you work for a large company that would have a head psychiatrist. If you want a bigger pay scale, larger space, high-class patients ... you'll need to move to a bigger city.

It's a competitive field, so it may be hard to get into. Check the area where you plan on going to see how the job market is.

Other jobs with a psychology degree ... you could be an interior decorator (they use them for homes - feng shui and such, institutions, supermarkets, you name it), or you could counsel people at a specific company (school, police department, large company with high stress levels). The degree itself won't be too useful in other fields since it's pretty specialized, but you could use it as an undergraduate degree if you choose to go to graduate school.

To prescribe medications and counsel you would need to become a psychiatrist. I believe there is a different degree, other than psychology, for this path, but right now I am drawing a blank on what it is specifically called. I'll edit this later if I think of it.

Psychology is a very versatile degree, other than counseling you can work in marketing, be a criminologist, manager, real estate, there are plenty more possibilities that the sites below discuss. Best of luck
