Your expectations are not realistic. You need to double the amount you are willing to pay, if not triple it, for what you are wanting. Finding high ceilings there will be really hard, it is not the normal style as it will cost way to much money for AC there. Orthopedic surgeons can be that way about pain.I'd bug the hell out of whomever is on call until you get adequate pain relief. I'd also call the hospital and lodge a complaint with them. If it's really out of control, consider a trip to the ER, although that might be more trouble than it's worth.
If you have a family doctor, you can call and let him/her know about the problem. He/she is unlikely to get involved in the pain management, but may be less likely to refer to that surgeon.

Some Conservative pain relieving methods are the following.-Get a ice pack a place on your back for half an hour and then get a hot water bottle and put on for half an hour,keep switching throughout the day.
-Deep breathing.
-Sleep but for no more then 10 hours.You will stiffen up if you stay lying down all day,this will cause pain.
-Go to a pharmacy and buy some medication.
